Skiing: A Poem Analysis
The main focus in skiing is to make turns. This may not seem like a lot, but people spend their entire lives perfecting their ski turns. The mind, body, and skis of the skier need to be working together in perfect harmony in order for the skier to be successful. A skier may make hundreds of turns in a day, but to create a turn of flawlessness, every single little ligament, tendon, and muscle in the skier's body needs to be pushing and pulling the right way. In my opinion, it is impossible to be a perfect skier or a perfect athlete of any sport for that matter, but on the other hand, it is possible to get close to that point much like a mathematical function approaching an asymptote. I very easily can relate this to our human society and how a true utopian society can and never will exist. Although, by everyone contributing and all parts working together in civilization, we can get much closer to achieving utopia. In my earlier years of life I didn’t have a clear understanding of the true realities of what was happening in the …show more content…
There is a line in the Boy Scout oath which states “To help other people at all times” I ponder this line everyday as I strive to find ways to make the world a better place. Ever since I understood the true meaning of that line in the oath, I have been committed to helping other people. Being a part of Boy Scouts as well as National Honor Society, I volunteer in numerous charity organizations and events within the community. I feel that my greatest contributions to society are those in which the community is directly affected in a positive way as a result of my actions. One of the events I enjoy most is Feed The Hungry, in which we provide hot meals to homeless people. I receive immense joy from this because the act of putting a hot plate of food in front of a thankful person who is truly in need, provides an unsurpassed feeling of satisfaction and

Hunters in the snow has strong literary depth in relation to human nature and weather. All of the characters contrast one another. For example, during the first scene it is evident that Tub is not “in” with Kenny and Frank. This displays bullying and a sense of social darwinism. Tub is overweight and cannot seem to keep up with the other two men, so they single him out as different.…

Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…

The first time I experience grit was when I first went skiing for my first time at Sundown, which is a ski resort near Dubuque. At first I did not like skiing, because I would always fall, but I was determined to be a good skier. By my second time at Sundown I started to get the hang of it. By my third night I could go down all the hills in a controlled manner, then I started to really enjoy skiing. I then found out if I keep on working and try my hardest on something it will always pay off in the end. Grit made me take something I dislike, and made it into one of my favorite things to do in the winter. Today I have been skiing for over 3 years. Even after I hurt my back skiing 2 years ago, I still went back the next year.…

    Roadblocks: Poem Analysis

Many writers on their venture to becoming great, are faced with roadblocks. I too feel those stresses. When sitting down to begin a story, novel, or poem we all strive to be different. But as Baldwin explains, "there is no original thought, because we all humans think and feel has been thought and felt so many times before, by so many generations." This in itself makes starting writing a very daunting task. Not to mention the sea of fellow authors you are competing with for limited shelf space. A trip to a jam packed bookstore reiterates this feeling instantaneously. Really, what sets the writer apart is the original perspective and finding out what shape to give it to really hold the readers attention. This can all be achieved through the power in…

Last Thursday we went to the Stone Soup kitchen to help for prepare a meal for homeless. My initial expectations were cooking from scratch and washing dishes. I was so excited not just because I enjoy cooking, but because I would help to feed hungry people. As soon as we arrived, the chef introduced herself and told us about how Stone Soup help people in need. Then she told us about the dishes they would serve to people. My first mission was brushing bread with a mixture of butter, garlic and parsley. Then, I brought some ice, carried the dessert close to the serve window, and pour many dozens of milk in pitchers. That duties were so easy; in fact, I did expect that at all. So, after doing that duties, I realize this volunteering…

Mark Twain once said, "The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time." A.E. Houseman, in the tragic poem “'To an Athlete Dying Young," examines the themes of youth and premature death. The poem addresses a young runner who epitomized glory by winning a race and earning the heart of his townsmen. The triumph of the youth's winning of a race is matched by the ironic triumph of his death. The usage of metaphoric language, imagery, sophisticated literature, and rhyming couplets created a complex poem that obtains these subjective themes. The effectiveness of the poem contributes to the overall purpose Housman was trying to propose, for the speaker of the poem examines how the individual in…

The issue of whether or not our lifestyles are environmentally and economically sustainable has been the source of an ongoing debate and prompted an opinionative piece with an accompanying photograph by Paul Evans, “Skiing into Oblivion” (March, 2008). Contending in a predominately concerned and passionate tone, Evans argues that our consumption of the planet’s resources is irresponsible and that we are becoming increasingly motivated by the need to attain unrealistic lifestyles driven by consumerism. However, he also encourages his audience to take action through the use of emotive language, saying that “it is still possible to change direction and take a conservationist route.”…

About 2,500 miles east lies the cold and rainy city of Canton, Ohio. The majority of my childhood was spent inside the house as Ohio was not ideal for outdoor adventure. Although, after turning 6, I was introduced to snow skiing . It became an enjoyable hobby of mine for years. Skiing opened my eyes to the beauty of nature and the serenity it provided. I loved the smell of fresh air and the exhilarating feeling of gliding down the mountain. It is a very peaceful sport and provides a silence away from everyday life. Coincidentally, I learned of ski club in middle school where I could ski with several other students that enjoyed this exercise as well. I joined the club and looked forward to the weekly Sunday trips. It showed the importance…

Secondly, a good skier would acknowledge that it takes years to master the art of skiing; I have been skiing since the age of 2 and there is still room for improvement, whereas snowboarding only takes a few weeks to be almost prefect. Last year throughout the season after a full day of ski training I would put on a snowboard a have a snowboard lesson. After about 8 lessons I could go down all of the black runs on a snowboard. Many people have told of this happening and if a sport only takes a few weeks to master then everyone can agree that the culture of snowboarding is far less refined than the culture of skiing.…

Being on National Honor Society and sports teams throughout high school, I had enjoyed participating in many volunteer experiences before coming to Drake. Every year our basketball team would collect food around our community to be donated to various food drives in nearby cities. With only general assumptions about food pantries, I always wondered how they worked. Now, after being able to volunteer at the IMPACT food pantry over the last few months, my original assumptions about food panties has transformed. The service-learning class I took this semester challenged many other perspectives in my life.…

Tuesday, December the eighth, I had my first experience volunteering. As an active member of Webster County High School’s Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) club, I decided that I would leave archery practice a few minutes early and head towards the Providence Food Bank. Every second Tuesday of each month, HOSA meets at the food bank at five-thirty to help prepare senior citizen boxes and assist people in shopping at the food bank. Intrigued by the opportunity to gain a few bonus points and support the club that I am passionate about, I figured why not give it a…

For a couple of years now, I have been helping put together thanksgiving dinners for disadvantaged people and families in our community. I started doing this in my sophomore year of high school with one of my classes, Job’s For Maine Graduates. This program or class is all about helping people in need. When I started this class my teacher asked me to be the vice president and help out a little more. When thanksgiving came around he asked me to help out with this event. A lot of people come to help out, even our principal and Tom Saviello one of our town representatives; always show up to lend a hand. This thanksgiving dinner is held at the Mt. Blue High School Cafeteria, on Thanksgiving Day, it’s free of charge but we do accept donations to help fund more projects we do.…
