charles dickens evokes sympathy for his potagonist philip pirrip in a variety of diffrent ways. For starters, the scene is set using a sinister aspect, a gloomy , depressing churchyard were pip recalls visiting his parents and siblings graves,'my first fancies regarding what they look like were unreasonably derived from thier tombstones.' This gives the reader a sense of sorrow for pip as he is explaining he hasnt any memories of his parents then adds,'i never saw my father or my mother, and never saw any likeness of them...' pip is shown in a very sad light and the reader feels sympathy which is the goal dickens had set himself right...? we also learn he had five little brothers , now all he has is their gravestones. this is shocking, even though we have known death was very common is this era , as they didnt have any medical resources or the cures we have found in those days, so childhood death wasnt a surpise because of poor diets , bad medical care and poor housing which only wealthy people could afford i can show this by...'five little brothers of mine-who gave up trying to get a living, exceedingly early in that universal struggle...' dickens makes it very clear that pips brothers were younger then he was by using repittion of the word little to give the tale woe and almost make the reader grief for this small children.

While different ages are momentous in the United States, when a person turns twenty-one it seems as if the person is definitely ready to enter the real world. A twenty-one year old step’s into the real world of grownups, accounting, and a legal drinking limit. A twenty first birthday is very special, as is someone’s sixteenth and eighteenth birthday. Both poems by Samuel Johnson and A.E. Housman demonstrate a person turning twenty-one, but both poems demonstrate different views on how the speaker and the audience feel. “To Sir John Lade, on His Coming of Age” is about the speaker telling his audience on how he feels about finally turning twenty-one. “When I Was One-and-Twenty” describes a young adult listening to an elder or someone they look up too about their new age. Both of these poems have a condescending or rude tone while they either talk or listen to the advice that they are given.…

‘Persimmons and silk’ was printed in 1997 by Cressida Campbell, an Australian artist born in Sydney 1960. This piece of artwork is a woodblock print, drawn directly onto a plywood block using a linear drawing technique and is …cm x …cm. The theme of this print is a still life composed of flowers and fruit on a silk tablecloth. It is not a symmetrical print; while it is very balanced it is asymmetrical in design. In the left foreground there is a bowl of persimmons and the flowers are in the middle ground. The viewpoint is so close up there seems to be no background. When the viewer looks at this piece of artwork they almost feel as if they are standing right above the table. There is also a sense that it is slightly Japanese in the use of colours and setout, and particularly in the pattern of the tablecloth.…

According to the essay Herodotus: Xerxes Invades Greece, from The Histories, Herodotus was a very famous historian, who gave his account of the battle of Thermopylae. It is significant though to recognize that Herodotus was Greek and giving an account of what happened when the Persians defeated them. In the text Xerxes has many incidents that portray him as superstitious and tyrannical. Some examples of Xerxes’ tyranny is his plans to “march an army through Europe against Greece,” his want to not rest until he has taken and burnt Athens, wants to extend the Persian territory throughout all of Europe, his beheading of his master- builders, and his lack of mercy towards his slave and his five sons. Xerxes shows his superstitions when he sends for the Magians to tell him why the sun has disappeared, and the day has so quickly tuned to night. Turning to the actions in battle, those of the Spartans tell me that they are a strong willed people who do not give up easily, if at all, even when faced with a great challenge and are outnumbered. Besides this essay showing the Greeks strong will, this essay seems to promote their use of wit and skill in tricking the Persians into thinking there were less of them than there actually was. The account was written by a Greek, so the information in the story would cast them in a more positive light. Lastly, in our text, Western Civilization, there is a thurough evaluation of the significance of the Persian invasions on the Greek political and intellectual…

From the second paragraph in chapter 1, Dickens tries to get the reader’s sympathy to be directed towards Pip. He begins with the fact that he was an orphan so young he “never saw any likeness of either of them” then fades into the fact he “derived from the tombstones” what his parents looked like. I think within the feeling of sympathy, readers are able to relate to the character you feel it towards and makes them more likeable as a result.…

In the opening chapter we are introduced to Pip who tells us that his father is dead along with his mother and that his sister is married to the blacksmith to whom he lives with. Pip has no memory of his parents and he can only imagine what they were like, as photographs did not exist. Dickens makes an effort to create consideration for Pip in the opening scenes “To five little stone lozenges, each about a foot and a half long, which were arranged in a neat row beside their grave, and were sacred to the memory of five little brothers of mine. This tells us that Pip is an orphan and that he is lonely. Dickens uses his descriptive skills in setting the scene of the churchyard where Pip is. “Ours was marsh country,” “this bleak place overgrown with nettles was the churchyard “. Here Dickens is describing the churchyard as a dark place where nobody would want to live or be able to live and because of this it would be a lonely place much like Pip is a lonely person. In the opening chapter Pip shows his young naivety, “I looked all round for the horrible young man”, Pip believes the convict when he tells Pip there is someone else there even if this may not be true. Pip, although young, tries to disguise his fear; this is Dickens showing the reader that even though Pip is young he has the qualities to be the protagonist of…

The reader first sees how sympathetic Pip is when he meets the escaped convict, Magwitch, in the graveyard. Dickens creates a sense of pathos through Pip’s description of Magwitch “he hugged his shuddering body in both his arms”, which shows that he is in a terrible state and about to literally fall apart. Here Magwitch is portrayed as vulnerable, injured and not very menacing. This novel is narrated by Pip; therefore it is Pip that is describing Magwitch in a pitiful state. Consequently, Pip does not see Magwitch as a threat; instead he feels sorry for him and is sympathetic.…

It was a Monday morning at my high school and the topic of everyone's conversation was the past weekend. Usually explaining how drunk or how stoned they were and the uncontrollable mishaps that they didn't even remember until the next day if at all. For example, they tell me and are other friends that weren’t there "Man, I was soooo wasted last night, I must have drank like a case of beer and like half a bottle of vodka" or “Man I was so stoned, I must of ate my kitchen dry”, all told with smile of excitement hoping to do it again the next weekend or day. This regular occurrence got me thinking, why do we brag ourselves and praise others for accomplishing something that requires absolutely no skill and is dumb? In short, why do we get drunk or stoned?…

How many times have you visited the grocery store and come back with a lot of things that you later realize you do not need but you just bought because they looked good at the time? This is the power of advertisements. Marketers use various techniques in order to make promotions for products so that they look really appealing and attractive to the customers. These people use various cues that target the emotions and values of the consumers, which are pulling then into buying the products. Some marketing techniques are so successful that they attract even those people who really do not need the product in the first place. This means that advertising makes us buy things that we really do not need.…

From the beginning, Pip appears to be childlike. He is still calling himself "Pip" which is all that his "infant tongue could make of" his two names Phillip Pirrip. This makes Pip appear naïve or simple because he hasn't yet grown up to be called his proper name of Phillip. The naivety of Pip seems to be a running theme through this extract. The way he determined the characters of his deceased parents and siblings from their tombstones is immature. The reasons for this may be because Pip had no-one around his age to grow up with and so has been kept as a child by the over-powering presence of his sister and the playful…

Dickens introduces us immediately to Pip who is the narrator of the story looking back on his own story as an adult you can tell this as Dickens introduces Pip, ‘’my father name being Pirrip, and my Christian name Philip, my infant tongue could make of both names nothing longer or more explicit then Pip’’ dickens uses complex language with ‘’my infant tongue’’ this shows how the older Pip is telling the story in past tense. Young Pip is staring at the gravestones of his parents he has never met them because they died soon after his birth and his five little brothers. Pip tells us at present that he lives with his sister ‘’Mrs Joe Gargery, who is married to a blacksmith’’.…
