Six Primary Movements
The body is capable of many movements which collectively, allow us to perform everything that involves any movement at all. The six primary movements of the body that occur at the joints between segments are: flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, circumduction, and rotation. The six primary movements, along with any other anatomical movement, occur within three planes of motion; frontal, sagittal, and transverse. Flexion is defined as decreasing the angle between two body segments or bones. Flexion exercises often occur with a pulling force action, such as in the seated leg curl when the heels of the feet are pulled toward the gluteus maximus. Extension movements or exercises usually occur with a pushing force or action, such as seen with the seated leg extension in which you push the feet outward away from the body. Another exercise involving extension is the dumbbell overhead triceps press. Abduction is defined as movement of a body part away from the midline of the body. The midline is an imaginary line that travels down the center of the body. A few exercises involving abduction are: reverse pec deck, dumbbell lateral raises, and the standing hip abduction with a band/s. Adduction is the opposite of abduction, defined as movement of a body part toward the midline of the body. A pretty common exercise involving adduction is the dumbbell or cable incline chest fly. Another example of adduction is on the hip adductor machine when the legs come together. Circumduction is a combination of several movements which collectively outline a geometric cone. The combination of movements that collectively create circumduction are: flexion, extension, adduction, and abduction. Exercises of which circumduction takes place are: arm circles; which involve the shoulders, knee circles; which involve the calves, hamstrings, and quadriceps. Other examples of circumduction are truck circles, hip circles, ankle circles, and thumb

    Starting in athletic position, or the ‘start phase’, ankles are slightly dorsiflexed, knees flexed slightly, hips are flexed, and both the lumbar and cervical spine are extended. Shoulders are abducted at a ninety degree angle, and the shoulder girdle has slight upward rotation; the radioulnar joint is pronated, while the wrist and fingers are extended. All motions in the first phase are done bilaterally. While in the first phase, the great toe and lesser toes are both in the flexed position.
