Situational Attribution Definition
The main purpose of this essay paper is to provide broad definition of terms, answers short question in a prices format and provide answers to questions in an essay structure.
Definition
Attribution can be considered as a field of cognitive therapy that attempts to illustrate how people explain causes of behavior, both of others and those of their own. Recency effect refers to a situation whereby a person is influenced by what they have last heard or seen because the recent event is retained as a complete knowledge while primacy effect can be regarded as a condition in which the early information blocks our perception of subsequent information. Situational attribution refers to the behaviour of a person in a place which is influenced by the environment while dispositional attribution is the where the behavioral causes lie within the acting person.

A problem associated with schemas and prototypes is that they can contribute to prejudice and stereotypes (Michener, Delamater, & Myers, 2004). Implicit personality theories can be considered as a manner in which a recently designed impression is connected to what is previously known about an individual, product or a company. Implicit personality theories relate to halo effect because an impression is developed in the mind after a product or a company has been observed. Confirmatory bias is a cognitive phenomenon which describes why people seek information on what they already know and they are ready to refute any divergent opinion (Michener, Delamater, & Myers, 2004).     Attributions are the causal judgments about why the event or behavior occurred. These attributions can be either internal (made about a person’s characteristics, e.g. personality) or external (made about a person’s situation e.g. weather). One type of the attribution theory that helps us to determine the “why” in behavior is the Kelley’s Covariation Model of Attribution (Kelley, 1967). In this model, behaviour is analyzed to see how well it is correlated either internal or external factors or a combination of both. When making attributions using the Kelley’s covariation there are three criteria in which the attributions are based on: consensus, distinctiveness, and consistency. Consensus criterion is whether the behavior is correlated with the situation or in other terms whether different people do this behavior in the same situation. Distinctiveness refers to the correlation between behaviour and the individual specifically how unique the behavior is to that particular situation.     The fundamental attribution error is when a person overestimates the influence of another person’s personality over a remark or behavior rather than giving credit to the influence the situation may have on the person.
