REACTION by Ms. Precy

Last August 4, 2013, we ABE students of section matalino had our site visit in Norzagaray Bulacan. It took us 2 hours to travel from Manila to Norzagaray. We were so excited because that is our first time to have that activity. The environment was so refreshing and clean unlike in the urban area. Ms. Julie from DENR oriented us regarding the preparation in tree planting. We have learned so many new information that will help us to save the mother earth by doing a tree planting. We will not just plant trees but we should also take good care of it by putting fertilizer, watering it and also clean the surroundings. This project is part of a series of activities required by the environmental science subject under Professor Demie Sioco Atienza with the support of our Dean Emanuel Raon Santos. After the orientation of Ms. Julie we started to hike going to the mountain where the exact location of the tree planting. Thou it was hard, tiring, and slippery journey yet we enjoyed it so much. It was so challenging and exciting moment for us because it was our first time to hike the mountain. Instead of complaining we became united and helpful with each other. Upon reaching the site, Ms. Julie shared about the stories of that site before, according to her there is no trees in that mountain and they just started to plant last 2006. Until now they continued to inspire students to plant trees in that area. Afterwards we started to clean the area for the preparation of our actual tree planting that will be happened on August 17, 2013. Last August 17, 2013 was the actual tree planting. We arrived the place at around 9:00am. Our first activity is to visit the IPO Dam and learned the important use of the water and where it came from. We were told by Ms. Julie to go down to see the IPO Dam. We were so thrilled when we saw the view. We have learned from our tour guide from DENR that IPO Damn is a man made and we also knew that the water from La-mesa and

The author Julia Butterfly Hill book is a personal reference of the adversity she overcame when faced with saving a part of nature, a part of what defines her, a piece of something she would never let go of. In this novel the author gives biographical evidence of not only her love of saving the redwood trees. The story begins in December of 1996, in the town of Stafford, California. There was a mudslide which was catastrophic and buried seven homes. The removal of the redwood trees was what she states to be a cause and effect of this disaster because they absorb the moisture that causes erosion. She was up against the Maxxam Corporation an organization who wanted to cut down the Redwood Forests of California to make profit of the ever needing demand of lumber.…

The redwood trees in the forest range from 400 to 800 years old and they are up to 250 feet tall. Flat trails that are easy to walk loop all through the trees so that visitors can get close to them. In between the tall redwoods, there are red alders, California big leaf maples, tanoaks, and Douglas Fir trees. The floor o f the forest is covered in ferns, fungi, duff, and debris. Duff is a thick layer of the forest floor that holds a lot of moisture and acts like mulch for the forest. There are a few bridges that cross the Redwood Creek, which flows through…

The Appalachian Trail is one of the longest, most unforgiving trails in the United States, and even the world. Bill Bryson proved this, by walking the great A.T. himself. He took a friend with him, Katz, and they took a trip they would never forget. Bryson is very descriptive with his tale, “A Walk in the Woods”, and uses imagery a lot. He creates tense and shockingly alarming moods in his writing, especially in this story, which engages the reader only more.…

They get the evergreen name because they are green year-round and never lose their needles. Conifers are also one of the two main types of trees in the park. The jeffrey and ponderosa pines are found at lower elevations. The ponderosa pine bark is like a jigsaw puzzle. It lives in lower elevations and can get up to six feet in diameter. The jeffrey pine is similar to the ponderosa pine but lives at higher elevations with the sugar pine which has large pine cones, short needles and reddish bark and can get to seven feet in diameter. Pines that are higher than the jeffrey and sugar are called lodgepole and whitebark. The lodgepole is spread around the U.S. The whitebark has purple-tinted cones and is sticky. Red firs can be found at two different elevations, have two different cone and needle lengths and two different colors. Found at the highest elevation is the foxtail pine that has adapted to rocky life atop. There are several different kinds of trees, too many to put in here really. The biggest trees are the park’s giant sequoias which can live for 2,000 plus years, weigh over 2 million pounds, stand over 300 feet tall and be over 40 feet in diameter. These trees can comfortably fit and fifteen story building underneath the first branches which are 150 feet off the ground. The sequoias have cones with thousands of oatmeal size seeds and it take a fire to dry them out enough to release the seeds. They can be found at…

I sat there in disbelief, I couldn’t believe my new teacher was forcing me hike a trail and then write a essay about it. But I had to, so I decided to hike the Indian Hill trail, besides I had heard positive reviews about this trail by my friends. The leaves were just turning hues of gold and yellow, I stepped out of the car and was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t freezing cold My mom yelled after me, ‘’Be safe.’’ I ignored her. So I started to hike up the trail it was nice, I usually hiked in the Adirondacks so this was a pleasant change. Hardwoods are different than hiking in the pine forest of the mountains, for one thing on this trail there was only a slight incline where as in the mountains the trails…
