On May 10, 1940, Winston Churchill became British Prime Minister. On May 13, he presented his angle on acquiring victory “at all costs”, and some contend that this “Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat speech is what made his career. This speech was given by Churchill on his entrance into the House of Commons with the presence of the outgoing prime minister. There has been controversy surrounding his intense speech regarding the multiple ultra-nationalistic statements he makes, however in this quote, he poses the effective idea that victory must be attained at all costs, even in spite of “terror”, and it is apparent that his intentions regarding his speech are to let the people of Great Britain know that he is dedicated to serving his country and…

Obviously reading about Patrick Henry is like a flash back to the revolution era. His Speeches are one of the best in America because Patrick Henry motivates the people of Virginia to fight for liberty. That speech made him famous and nowadays he is in the History books . Truly, Patrick Henry is one of the greatest American authors because of his writing style and affect on history . “He spoke without any notes in a voice that became louder and louder, climaxing with the now famous ending. Following his speech, the vote was taken in which his resolutions passed by a narrow margin, and thus Virginia joined in the American Revolution”.(“Patrick Henry.” )…
his speech in order to deliver his purpose to his audience. Winston Churchill was well known for his speeches that he used diction to support his purpose. In this speech “We Shall Fight On The Beaches” Winston Churchill used a lot of war diction in order to support his purpose of writing this speech. Churchill began his speech saying “rapid retreat” to signify the horrible attacks that lead to the soldiers to back away quickly. Following that Churchill said “the destruction of the fine Belgian Army” as in the well-constructed army got destroyed till the last part alive.…
The most effective speeches throughout history have all incorporated paralleling methods that have made them so successful. Techniques such as applying ethos, logos, pathos, keeping you speech simple, using anecdotes and appealing audiences are just some of the pivotal characteristics that make up a great dialogue. The speech I have chosen to analyze is Winston Churchill’s “Their Finest Hour.” This speech was given at a time when Europe was experiencing the atrocities of the second world war. The historical value in this speech is unfathomable, less than a month after the rise spirits, England engaged the Nazi’s head on which is now known as the battle of Britain . However, Britain continued to encounter intense bombings from the Nazi’s from…
Churchill begins the second paragraph using a noun that unites the British, even himself, and figuratively puts everyone on the battle field. He says “we.” Making this statement shows any reader or listener that he is a strong leader. Any leader admittedly joining the group, willing to work, or willing to fight with their team shows a strong will to win. As the speech goes on, this use of “we” and “our” doesn’t lose steam. Entering the sixth paragraph, this “we” not only unites but is transformed into its purpose – to ignite the responsibility it’s going to take at home as a whole. “We must expect that as soon as stability is reached on the Western Front, the bulk of that hideous apparatus of aggression… will be turned upon us… we are ready to face it, to endure it, and to retaliate against it to any extent...” It is clear that this battle will not be won by sitting idle at home with worry. From home there can’t be a single fan left in the crowd, but a united front on the field. Churchill convinces his audience that together all the “more” that “… we must provide… we must have…” more than attainable.…
Unfortunately the French fell into the Germans on June 22, 1940. This was just the start of Hitler's plan to take over the world. Battle of Britain After the fall of France, Britain had no one to turn to. The prime minister Winston Churchill said that Britain would stand up to Nazis and would never give into the…
The Battle of Britain began several weeks after Winston Churchill’s famous speech in which he stated, “The Battle of France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin.” Unfortunately, he was…
Henry V doesn’t let any of his men feel any less in his speech to them. He’s able to get the people who are below everyone else to the people who are higher to feel equal. Henry V speaks to all his men the same and that would make them feel equal. I will give three examples of how Henry V makes all his men feel equal.…
March 15th 1965 was the date that a very inspiring speech was given by Lyndon B. Johnson. The words “we shall overcome” were echoed by Johnson regarding the African American’s that struggled…
I would enjoy witnessing any public speech given by, or any debate involving, Abraham Lincoln. Although he is famous for his incredible eloquence and cleverness, he is also known for his less-than-potent voice. I would comfort me knowing one of the most famous public speakers had problems speaking as well.…
The Cross of Gold speech was delivered by William Jennings Bryan, a former United States Representative from Nebraska, at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on July 9, 1896. In the address, Bryan supported bimetallism or "free silver", which he believed would bring the nation prosperity. He decried the gold standard, concluding the speech, "you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold".[1] Bryan's address helped catapult him to the Democratic Party's presidential nomination; it is considered one of the greatest political speeches in American history.…
I believe that the Gettysburg Address was a turning point in the Civil War because the Confederacy lost the Battle of Gettysburg from a military standpoint. Many reasons were suggested, but one of the main reasons was mental. It was General Lee's only hope to win a big victory in Northern territory, but he lost it, and therefore the morale went down. Lee had to go from offensive to defensive.…
British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain gave this speech to the House of Commons on September 1st, 1939, hours after Hitler's troops had invaded Poland. Chamberlain and others had spent years negotiating with Hitler in order to prevent another war in Europe. The point of this speech is too inform people of what Hitler has done and of what the British response will be.…
On June 1, 1865, Senator Charles Sumner commented on what is now considered the most famous speech by President Abraham Lincoln. In his eulogy on the slain president, he called it a "monumental act." He said Lincoln was mistaken that "the world will little note, nor long remember what we say here." Rather, the Bostonian remarked, "The world noted at once what he said, and will never cease to remember it. The battle itself was less important than the speech."…
