In Tavistock, Devon year 1544, Francis Drake was born. Drake’s birth is not formally recorded, but since he received command of the Judith in 1566 when he was twenty-two years old, his birth would have been in 1544. While in Kent Drake was …show more content…
Le Testu was capture later and beheaded but Drake and small band of his men carried as much treasure as they could back to the raiding boats but when they got there, the boats were gone. After burying the treasure, Drake and his men built a raft and sent to volunteers to the coast where they had left their flagship. Needless to say after some 18 miles of trudging through jungles and mountains carrying treasure, Drake looked alarmingly bedraggled. When his men saw him, they feared the worst and asked him, warily, how his raid had gone. Drake teased them a little by looking downhearted but finally laughed and said, according to a wikipedia article titled “Francis Drake” (January 9, 2012) “Our voyage is mad, lads!”. Drake had returned to Plymouth by August 9, 1573. After his successful raid in Tierra Firme, Elizabeth I of England sent Drake on an expedition along the Pacific coast of the Americas against the Spanish. After facing storms, a loss of men and ships, serious injuries and a whole winter along the Pacific coast, Drake finally captured a Spanish ship carrying 25,000 pesos of Peruvian gold. Drake also learned of another treasure ship, to which he gave chase and eventually

Queen Elizabeth sent Francis out along the Pacific coast of South America in late 1577. Elizabeth also gave him the task of exploring the Northwestern coast of North America under the table in hopes to find a trading passage. Francis had five vessels for the journey. Among his crew was John Winter, a commander of one of the sea vessels, and officer Thomas Doughty. Intense tensions were uproared between Francis and Doughty during the trip, possibly drove by political intrigue. After arriving off the coast of Argentina, Francis had Doughty put in jail with the charges of planned mutiny. After a short and a tiny bit illegal trial, Doughty was “proven” guilty and executed.…

Cornelius Vanderbilt was one of America’s leading Business tycoons in the early 18th century. Many believed his genius and success as a businessman was contributed to his ability to seize upon opportunities that appeared unexpectedly. Some even thought that because Vanderbilt was so successful, he had planned everything in advance. Born poor , Vanderbilt had used his obvious aptitude for business, and luck to amass his empire, involving himself in the steam engine, both on land and sea. He tried and succeeded in connecting the railway to create a very large monopoly over the railroad system during his lifetime. Being involved in transportation, this was very important because transportation was the most important and lucrative business…

Christopher Columbus, an explorer from Spain who sailed the ocean blue in 1492 and gained fame after “discovering” a land now known as America. Although Christopher Columbus was not the nicest man on earth he did open a lot of doors for his people. So the question is Christopher Columbus, hero or villain. Christopher Columbus to me was always an over praised man. To start off, he thought he was in Asia when he entered America.…

Coming up with devious ways to defeat the Spaniards worse than they did him, mapping out the trade routes of the ships coming and going in and out of Spain he would eventually find a weak point. In 1572 having obtained from the queen a privateering commission, which amounted to a license to plunder in the king of Spain’s lands Drake set sail for America in command of two small ships, the 70-ton Pasha and the 25-ton Swan. He was nothing if not ambitious and ready for the battle, for his aim was to capture the important town of Nombre de Dios, Pan. Although Drake was wounded in the attack, which failed, he and his men managed to get away with a great deal of plunder by successfully attacking a silver-bearing mule train. This was perhaps the foundation of Drake’s fortune. In the interval between these episodes, he crossed the Isthmus of Panama. Standing on a high ridge of land, he first saw the Pacific, that ocean hitherto barred to all but Spanish ships. It was then, as he put it, that he “besought Almighty God of His goodness to give him life and leave to sail once in an English ship in that sea.” (Sir Francis Drake). He returned to England both rich and famous. Unfortunately, his return coincided with a moment when Queen Elizabeth and King Philip II of Spain had reached a temporary truce. Although delighted with Drake’s success in the empire of her great enemy, Elizabeth could not officially acknowledge piracy. Drake saw that the time was inauspicious and sailed with a small squadron to Ireland, where he served under the earl of Essex and took part in a notorious massacre in July 1575. In which he seemingly disappeared off the face of the Earth as there are no recorded accounts of him until…

The interviews I have chosen for this assignment is the Julian Bond and John Hope Franklin interview. I find it interesting that both men are drawn to Thomas Jefferson because of the actions he had done during the period of the Revolution. With Thomas Jefferson being label as a Renaissance man by John Hope Franklin and an agronomist and an avid bibliophile. I am fascinated on how John Hope Franklin expressed why he was drawn to Thomas Jefferson, he stated that it was because he declared that he was the author of the Declaration of Independence, the author of Virginia Statute of Religious Liberties, and the founding father of the University of Virginia. It has dawned to me that Julian Bond had also expressed that Thomas Jefferson's intellect was far ranged and that made him one of the fascinating…

Francis Drake, pirate, slave trader, and murderer, was the name the Spanish feared most in the mid-to-late 1500’s. At a time where the English and the Spanish were at war, Drake gave the English a huge advantage by raiding Spanish ships and looting the Spaniards’ treasures at land. His quick temper and willingness to be violent made him a great pirate, his ocean navigating skills allowed him to circumnavigate the globe, and he was the first Englishman to accomplish that feat. He was also related to and taught by some of the most talented and dark pirates of the 1500’s. To Queen Elizabeth I and the English, Francis Drake was a patriotic hero. To the Spanish and the hundreds of slaves he was involved in kidnapping and trading, he was a pirate and a cold, heartless human being. Drake, the first Englishman…

Christopher Columbus made a total of four voyages in the span of twelve years, from 1492 to 1504. His voyage was not an easy one. He asked the king and queen several times for their finances to make the trip. Christopher Columbus eventually convinced them to allow him and his crew to go because he told them that he would discover a "back door" route to the riches of Asia, India and the "spice islands" - by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean instead of east. Christopher Columbus bought King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella gold, parrots, and spices to prove that he had actually found land. He also brought back with him the natives. While sailing back to Spain hundreds of natives died on Columbus ' three ships, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. The king and queen granted him more money for his next voyage.…
