Ignorance and materialism negatively affects humans some way or another, and society only increases these lifestyles. Whether or not we believe it, ignorance and materialism is a daily part in our lives today; thus, we cannot live without it. We try to ease our problems by blindingly accepting society’s norms and trends. Because we cannot formulate our own ideals and ways of life, we live in a false sense of justice and peace. In Tony Hoagland’s “Hard Rain,” the speaker witnesses these faults in our behavior at a shopping mall; however, he, similarly, is not able to escape that reality. The larger meaning of this poem, that we have no sense of individualism and morality, is specified by the author’s usage of diction and the disappointing, humorous, and controversial tone he uses to prove it.…

The Narrator also says things that are just about impossible. In the beginning of the story, he says, “I heard all things in heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in Hell.” (542). He is saying that he can hear things that know one could ever hear in their lifetime. He is being very dishonest, because practically everyone knows this is not true. Another example is when he says, “The ringing became more distinct-it continued and became more distinct…” (546). The ringing he is referring to is the heartbeat. The heartbeat of the man he killed, chopped up, and stuffed under the floorboards. This is impossible; to hear someone’s heart beat we need a stethoscope. We need certain tools, but he thinks he can hear a heartbeat with just his ear, and nothing else. Some people can’t hear people talking from across the room, and the majority of people can’t hear anything from a mile away. This shows he is untrustworthy, and he could be telling a false story.…

Producers Qunicy Jones and Mervyn Warren took George Frederic Handel's Messiah for a spin and did a wonderful job with it. They took a classical masterpiece and funk-defied it. This was one of the most important pieces of music to come across in decades, taking Handel's Messiah to the masses of R & B lovers. In true style, the composer re-arranged Handel's Messiah, to produce a classic collection of black music, while at the same time, carrying a European and Western tradition that is opposing to African origins of Black American music. History and music are combined in this project that celebrates G.F. Handel's original Messiah, an oratorio for four-part chorus of mixed voices, soprano, alto tenor and bass solo and piano.…
