Sin Nombre Movie Essay
INTRODUCTION The movie I chose to do my movie analysis on was Sin Nombre. I chose this movie because it stood out to me the most, mainly because of the title in Spanish. I used four concepts while analyzing this epic movie. First I applied the power elite theory to see who had the power in this power city and how they used their power. Then I used the social conflict theory to see what caused the people to get into the gangs and how the gangs acted to the people. The socialization theory is shown in the sense that the gang makes people believe that they are a part of a family when they join. The last concept I used was deviance because of all the violence that happened in the movie.
DESCRIPTION OF THE MOVIE
In Cary Fukunaga’s groundbreaking movie Sin Nombre we see a young man by the name of Willy in the Mara Salvatrucha gang. In the opening minutes of the film we see Willy visit a young boy by the name of Benito. Benito is yelled at by his grandmother because she does not want her grandson associated with gangs. Shortly after Benito gets jumped into MS13 and given the name of Smiley. In Sin Nombre Willy is “Casper” to his gang, but Willy to his girlfriend. But when his girlfriend secretly follows him to a gang meeting she gets into trouble and killed by Lil Mago, the gang leader, and things change drastically. On a mission that Willy, Lil Mago, and Smiley go on they rob people on the train on their way to the US. Here we see that Willy is fed up with Lil Mago and as Lil Mago tries raping a girl on the train Willy cuts his throat. Willy tells Smiley to leave and go home, but when Smiley returns home he goes to the “Destroyer”, which is the gang’s hangout spot, and tells them what has happened. The gang infuriated by the news Smiley has brought them puts out a “green light” to all their gangs to kill Willy because of what he has done.
We then begin to see that Willy is done with the crime scene because he helps the people on the train get by border patrol officers
