The two segments of the general environment that ranks highest in their influence on Netflix would be the technological segment and the demographics segment.
The technological segment includes the institutions and activities involved with creating new knowledge and translating that knowledge into new outputs, products, processes and materials (Hitt, 2013). The different tactics that Netflix could use to overcome these weaknesses would be to partner with different Hollywood studio companies and come up with a contractual agreement to make sure that Netflix stays full stocked with new releases so there will always be an ample supply of new releases.
As far as customer wait times for DVD Netflix needs to make sure that their distribution centers are able to have one day shipping so customers can receive their DVD or Blu-ray rentals in a timely manner instead of having them shipped out the next day. Netflix had a popular $9.99-a-month DVD rental and unlimited streaming plan that Netflix decided to separate into two different plans. Netflix realized that when most people want to rent a DVD they have to go to the store and rent it. Netflix came up with the idea that you can use internet services to rent videos and ship them to your home and that video streaming technology had become better and easier to obtain for the average viewer at home. Keeping up with that trend, the company started offering online streaming content. Online streaming has become very profitable for the company because half of its 11 million subscribers have used the "watch instantly" feature -- movies and shows without

What is Netflix’s strategy in the on-line movie rental market? What are Netflix’s sources of competitive advantage? Identify the competences key to the success of Netflix’s strategy and explain why. Netflix was a late entrant to the movie rental market and it was a first mover in the on – line movie rental market. Netflix’s strategy in the movie rental market is differentiation from traditional movie rental stores. Instead of attracting customers to a retail location, Netflix offered home delivery of DVDs through the mail. Why only DVDs? In 1998, most available movies were in VHS cassette format but Netflix concentrated on using only DVDs because its marketing strategy was to develop cross promotional programs with the manufacturers and sellers of DVD players, providing a source of content for the customers. Also, there was no competition in that niche market and DVDs were small and light which made them perfect for mail delivery.…

Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) forever altered the movie rental market in 1998. By doing as a lot of businesses were at the time, they took full advantage of internet retail. Blockbuster, the international video and game rental hub, was suddenly in turmoil. In 2004, they attempted to counter back with a Blockbuster Online ploy, but to no avail. Netflix, now with over 15 million subscribers, is the largest service for movies and TV series in the world. The ability to adapt and accurately predict progress in technology and consumer needs has allowed Netflix to continue to grow.…

Netflix clearly works from a marketing orientation. Market trends that Netflix has capitalized on are the increasing development of home theatre entertainment systems, time-starved consumers, the development of the Internet and the acceptance of e-commerce, the flexibility and quality of the DVD format, 24-hour consumerism, and the market’s desire for an extensive selection of available movie titles. Netflix delivers obvious customer value and satisfaction by exceeding expectations when it comes to fast delivery, delivering exactly what customers want precisely when they want it, and by offering customer-requested service extensions such as the Friends network and multiple preference lists for each subscribing household.…

With more than 30 million streaming members in the United States, Canada, Latin America, the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Nordics, Netflix, Inc. is the world’s leading internet subscription service for enjoying unlimited movies and TV shows. For one low monthly price, Netflix members can instantly watch movies and TV programs streamed over the internet to PCs, Macs and TVs and much more devices. One of Netflix’s core competencies is content delivered to your home. Their change in business model from DVDs only to DVDs and streaming reflected this competency and allowed them to access the streaming video market. Content delivery to the home and thru streaming online allowed them to put Blockbuster out of business and many other companies in the market. The latest business decision, then, actually breaks their core competency in half. The decision splits down a method of delivery, creating two companies with the same core competency – content delivery to the home. I think that this is a competitive advantage, valuable, rare and non-substitutable about Netflix but not difficult to imitate and in the next paragraph I’ll explain more about that.…

Furthermore, although the physical media has brought lots of profits, streaming is the future, not DVD rental. As the development of technology and internet, people always prefer to choose the steaming, because it is more convenient. For Netflix the streaming is also potential. Netflix only offers a portion of available content which has proven to be a problem to some of their customers. Needless to say this is one area where Netflix definitely needs improvement. There should be an increase in the amount of videos being offered for streaming. There are many different challenges that Netflix has had to overcome the past decade. When Netflix first emerged it pushed Blockbuster out of business because they offered something unique. Their differentiation offered mail-in DVDs that arrived next day for low prices. For many customers this was more convenient than going to the store because they could receive and return their DVD rentals fast and conveniently through the mail. As the years started to progress so did the technology in which customers would watch movies and play games. As technology grew the need for faster rentals also progressed. Customers no longer wanted to wait the 1 business day for their movie and game rentals. Netflix had to act quickly. The owners and operators of Netflix had developed a plan to stream movies online which would provide a faster viewing experience for its customers.…
