Simplly Dancing Research Paper
All nine of us girls from Simply Dancing Dance Studio sat criss cross on the floor surrounded by a hundred other dancers. The room was filled with so much laughter, the voice of the announcer could barely be heard. The announcer was a short, scrawny man who had one of those smiles that lit up a room. He rattled off the scores of all 327 of the dance entries in about two seconds. Once he finished, he took a deep breath and went into some long speech about how impressive all of the dances were, telling us we should all give ourselves a pat on the back, but no one seemed to be listening as everyone was too busy analyzing scores and discussing which routines might place. However, the moment he began to announce the winners, all of the chatter abruptly ceased. Everyone turned their ears into the announcer, anxious that their dances might not place. Everyone, that is, except for us nine. We all zoned out as this was only our first year competing and, with the amazing competition …show more content…
None of us would have been disappointed not to have placed, so it definitely came as a pleasant surprise. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized just how we won. Independently, we are each skilled dancers, but together we are a powerful team. In class, we push each other to try harder and to get stronger. We give each other support, so we are not afraid to fail sometimes. It is our tremendous teamwork, both on stage and off, that helped us win that award. It just goes to show that together, everyone achieves more. Teamwork is important for several reasons. People who work together learn the strengths and weaknesses of all team members. The best team is made of people that have a main attribute in common, but have different factors to offer. This way, everyone can ---. For example, my dance team has one thing in common: we are all very passionate about dancing. However, we are each strong with different

I was five years old, nervous, excited and just about as anxious as one could be as I stood front and center on the stage. The lights cut on, the music began and I presented the largest smile I was able to convey to the audience; it was my time to shine. At the moment, I was convinced that I longed to dance for the rest of my life.…

competition team that she was putting together. She picked out the best girls that were capable of competing. I was one of the chosen few and was honored to be on the competition team. There were so many hours of practices, but I did not mind. It was my passion and I was determined to learn every step I needed to help my dance team be successful. After a couple of years, I was ready for something more advanced and challenging. There was a dance studio in Meriden, CT called United Rhythms. It was located at an industrial looking area. I never would have thought to put a dance…

Although I felt a little hesitant, the activities allowed me to feel very comfortable because our instructors today were encouraging and supportive. For instance, Cecilia said to me “good job Ellyce” and they emphasized that we could go at our own pace and style—we weren’t forced to do any uncomfortable or difficult dance moves. By the end of the dance lesson, I was having a lot of fun that I felt like continuing. Their teaching method promoted creativity, co-operation (when we had to make a dance sequence of 8 counts in small groups) and community because, during the dance song, we would intermittently dance in our small groups and together as a big group, following the dance instructor, and this went back and forth. I’ve realized that dance is first about conscious memory, followed by muscle memory—it later comes automatically. Dance starts to become fun during the muscle memory stage. For the first time in my life, I could say that freestyle dance was fun and fulfilling. I think today’s dance lesson strengthened my love for dance and decreased my association of dance with…

For the past few weeks in Performance Arts Class, we have worked on choreography pieces created by different people in the class. Each person in the class was given the chance to be a choreographer. The choreographers would choose other students to act as performers in their dance. The choreographers would choose the performers based on the movement styles they had shown in previous classes. Not only were the students choreographing their own dances, but they were also performing in an average of three other dances. In this amazing experience, we were given the opportunity to put our creative and expressive qualities into our dance and those of our classmates. In this experience, I performed in three dances and was able to choreograph a dance with two of my classmates. I was able to use all of the different things I learned throughout the year in these pieces. I was able to see how I improved in being both a choreographer and a performer. I also learned about my abilities, while I worked in both of these roles, and how I…

Allison Kelly, junior and secretary of the swingers, was also a choreographer for the competition. Three choreographers were elected at the beginning of the semester who designed the team dance, taught it, and then worked with the team to make it clean before leaving for spring break, Kelly said. For the competition, Kelly said there were “no stops in their way,” as the team is cohesive and dedicated to dance. At this point in the semester, Kelly said, academics can wear on you, and so she “likes that Heartland gives us that new life.” Getting to Heartland is the goal, and so working towards is “exhausting, but in a good and exciting way,” Kelly…

Our primary focus from this point onwards was completely on the final musical scene and the ending scene. For the final musical scene we were thinking out a dance routine. For this I came up with a fifteen second dance routine, which will be done in the scene. In this dance routine Kim and Olivia run towards Luke and I. Then we are supposed to lift them as they jump into our arms. After the lift the girls are supposed to hang on to our necks and we would hold their leg and then spin them. After that, we are to perform the swing dance, which was taught really well by Luke. At the end of the swing dance the girls are to wrap their legs around the guys’ waist and then we are to swing them from one side to another. Then the girls are to get down and side we are to do a side to side step routine ending with a flip. The flip was easy to perform for Kim and I but Like and Olivia are still trying to get the hang of it. Now that the routine was decided, all the focus was put on practice, practice, and more practice. I feel like this dance routine adds a sense of something spectacular to our performance showing our burst of creativity and passion.…

Dance is something that everyone knows about, but not many people understand. As an avid dancer and competitor for over ten years, I’ve learned to embrace the many forms of dancing in this world. It’s hard to put a single definition on dance – ‘it is graceful, it is feminine’ – because there are just too many types of dancing, each with a unique style. What I can say right now, is that dance is a discipline that requires immense control of the body to accurately communicate the intent of the dance, but it is also flexible enough to allow individual emotions and personalities to shine through. Today, I would like to explore with you four very different types of dance: ballet, Chinese, ballroom, and hip hop.…
