Simon Birch Movie Review
Simon Birch True Hero
Ujdhesa Sutaj Based off of
A Prayer For Owen Meany by American author John Irving,
Simon Birch is a coming of age movie with a sense of drama and a comedic twist. It was created in 1998 by director and screenwriter
Mark St even Johnson
.
Simon Birch (Ian Michael Smith) and Joe
Wenteworth (Joseph Mazzello) are boys who have a reputation for being abnormal. Joe never knew his father, and his mother Rebecca, refuses to tell him, no matter how often he pleads.
Simon, meanwhile, "is an 11yearold dwarf whose outsize personality belies his small stature"Joe Frontera. Simon often asks the local reverend (David Strathairn) questions about god and his special purpose and joins Joe on his quest to find his biological father.
Simon Birch is born with a rare condition that makes him smaller than all the rest of the kids in town. Because of his condition, he believes that God made him for a special reason.
Simon and his best friend Joe, are both outcasts : Joe is the son of the town beauty, and
Simon, at age 12, is so small that he still plays the infant Jesus in the church Christmas pageant. In the summer of 1964, their relationship is put to the test when Simon hits a foul ball that strikes a disaster for Joe. Together, they try to find out who Joe's father is. Just as they suc ceed, a situation arises that demands a very small hero.
Simon Birch is a buddy movie, it focuses on two boys who are best friends, and it's set in the early 1960s. So there's a feeling that the action is diminished in the past. They quickly make themselves adored by the audience. Although their routine is typical playing baseball, racing to the creek for a swim, discussing girls the script has them perform tasks that help you see their inner struggles. Simon's humor is especially endearing. Joes mothers importance is serving as Simon's mom away from home, one who cares about him, unlike his

real parents, who permit Simon to live

As Ralph is sitting on the beach telling Simon about his desire to leave the island, Simon reassures Ralph that he will leave the island and be fine. Simon offers his wisdom to Ralph because he fully grasps onto the longing Ralph is feeling. Wanting to lift Ralph from that pain, he shows how gentle his heart is and how he cares for the rest of the group. Jesus also gave others his wisdom and advice, often to those seeking some direction in life. Although Simon does not attain supernatural powers, Jesus can for example, cure the blind. This allows Jesus to attend to the less fortunate and supply individuals with a sense of protection. Simon shows his powers in different ways, supplying fruit for the littluns when they cannot reach it. This gives the littluns someone to look to, as the other biguns seem to have forgotten about them. Tending to the common people, both Jesus and Simon are naturally compassionate and can sense the emotions of others well. Out of the goodness of their hearts both express their innocence in way in which they realize to do things not in spite of their guilt, but because naturally they are not morally…

The second character trait Simon possesses is that he is devotedly faithful. He is an enormous believer of God and loves sharing his faith with other people. He remains in solidarity, rarely speaking and gaining trust of both Jack and Ralph, who fight for the position of a leader. Simon is never aroused into violence, and manages to remain the only boy who is truly, consistently good, partly because of his nature. He remains good because his human nature is not provoked into savagery; he is simply above all the others. As for Piggy, his intellect arouses in him, a want to be heard; to spread his new and innovative ideas, instead of concealing them like Simon. Piggy represents the rational side of society, which at times makes him cold and careless of everything, except for gaining acceptance. The two represent separate parts of the deteriorating morality amongst the other boys, Piggy and Simon possess the qualities that are disregarded in the tumult of survival; Piggy is rational and intellectual, while Simon is the purity and goodness in people.…

This is essential to the portrayal of the story because it includes Joe’s thoughts and feelings about the father-son relationship, but does not include his father’s. Joe elucidates that, “Tomorrow for the first time in all their trips together he wanted to go fishing with someone other than his father.” By sharing this information he is acknowledging that it is a milestone of sorts in their relationship, because never in the eight years they have come to this place together has either of them gone fishing with anyone else but each other. Using Joe’s perspective on this event allows the reader to speculate on how his father will react, and to infer what his true feelings actually are below the surface. The reader can clearly see the extent to which Joe is struggling with breaking the news to his father. He admits that, “It was an ending and a beginning and he wondered just how he should tell his father.” The fact that Joe is so cautious of his father’s feelings shows how much he cares for him, but it also confirms the idea that the balance of their relationship has been slightly disrupted with the onset of Joe’s adolescence. This is the time when he attempts to tiptoe around his father’s feelings in order to slightly break free from tradition as he grows up. His father’s point of view is not shared during this story, so the reader must analyze his interaction with Joe to…

The innocence and virtuousness that Simon possesses is shown by his thoughts and actions. It is apparent that Simon is naïve when it comes to violence in the world because he does not even know what rape means when he is told the girl that used to live in their house was raped and killed. When Simon finds the doll that his brother kills, he “turned her face-down with his toe before he shut off the spigot.” Simon does not like violence and he tends to shy away from it. He shows respect for the doll when he turns it over because he is a kind, thoughtful person. He also shows that he follows rules when he “wait[s] exactly twelve minutes” while his brother places the body and hides. Simon is a thoughtful kid that tries to avoid trouble and maintains respectful intentions.…
