Similarities Between The Great Gatsby And Othello
Title There are different types of people in this world: people who do good and people who do evil. Their actions, thoughts, and intentions define them as the type of person they are. Writers such as William Shakespeare and F. Scott Fitzgerald have produced similar work that includes characters who share similar characteristics. Characters such as Daisy from “The Great Gatsby” and Iago from “Othello” contain similar characteristics. Although Daisy and Iago carry different motives, they share identical deceptive schemes which cause similar effects on others. Both characters through their actions, thoughts, and intentions, are defined as bad people who do evil to manipulate others and take advantage of them. To begin with, the differences between both characters are their motives. Daisy’s motive is wealth and social class. This is evident when Jordan explains how Daisy was deeply in love with a soldier (Gatsby) and that she was caught packing her bag on a winter night to go to New York and say good bye to the soldier. Her eyes fell on Jordan and me with a sort of appeal, as though she realized at last what she was doing---- and as though she had never, all along, intended doing anything at all. Say: Daisy’s change her mind!’” (Fitzgerald 76). Daisy loved Gatsby very much, but when she met Tom, she put Gatsby at the back of her mind and got close to Tom.     I, Jay Gatsby owe you a formal apology as I have finally come to the realization that my actions towards you and your partner Daisy were unacceptable and utterly immoral. It was my jealous heart that envied your relationship with Daisy and I take full responsibility for my actions. Tom, you respectively earned Daisy’s love and I attempted to steal that from you. For that I am truly sorry. I don’t expect you to ever forgive me, but I can at least try. The unruly remark that came out of my heated foul mouth was, “Your wife doesn’t love you, she’s never loved you” and it was completely uncalled for. Such an ill-tempered statement was an insult to your respectable personality, but alas I did not realize the cruelty in my words until now, so I apologize.     The character Jay Gatsby in Fitzgerald’s iconic novel, The Great Gatsby, embodies the desire to, “beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past,” (189).
