Silkwood Whistleblowing means that someone is using their ethical standards to tell on some unethical procedures or practices at work or at home. It is sometimes hard to decide when to blow the whistle and it all depends on someone’s own ethical standards. Some companies know about the wrong doings, but rather ignore it then try to fix it. They expect employees just to keep working and not say anything about the unethical issues that occur. Most of the companies that have unethical issues know about them and either think that it is ok or believe that it is the only way they can make a profit. Unethical behavior has its way of coming out to the open eventually. In the Silkwood whistleblowing case it cost Karen Silkwood her life for trying to do the right and ethical thing. She was working for nuclear plant and found a lot of health and safety violations that she was trying to get out in the open. It can start with that his boss will take care of the problem right away or he tells the employee not to worry about it, because it isn’t anything major. The employee decides to go to the next higher boss up after the first one told him not to worry about it. This still doesn’t get him anywhere and he is finally at the owner and that doesn’t change anything. Since most of the employees and managers seem to think that there is nothing wrong and don’t want that employee to keep saying anything else about it, they give him an ultimatum. He is given the choice of either drop the whole matter or lose his job. I believe that there is more unethical behavior going on in today’s companies then anyone can imagine. It is hard to find a new job, so a lot of employees rather not say too much or anything about any unethical behavior so they can support their
