According to Jimmy, he was only five year old but already went to prison to visit his father, “ I was five year old the first time I ever set foot in prison” (1). This is a shocking moment of the reading when the author introduced the story with this statement. In contrast to the ideal of a nuclear family, in which a father and a mother were together and experience a family stability. Despite being afraid of his father abusing when he was drunk, Jimmy did not succumb to the same fear as his older brother, Mieyo and sister Martina, “When he would stagger in drunk, Mieyo and Martina would hide under the bed or in the closet , but I wasn’t afraid of him. An interesting point is spotlighted in the novel as Lola continues to write in her diary. Faced with the possibility of homelessness and death, the characters come to realize that, in order to survive, they might need to have flexible morals and a loose representation of the humanity that used to be the norm in a society long gone. Humanity does not always translate into survival, as many subjects of novels past have discovered, and sometimes a person needs to stoop low just take make…

In the story, the businessman who had a social position met the young boy whose father was shot in Detroit. The crisis of this story is the boy stared the businessman without once blinking eyes or shifting stare. Moreover, the boy led the way to find his father and pointed at a long box where his father was there and told the reason why his father died. The conflict is showed about the differences between rich and poor or knowledge between people who are on the outside and people who are on the inside. In addition, the businessman promised that he would fix the mistake – just for the boy, it is the story’s central conflict resolved. With regard to me, I think as one on the students in this story that this resolution of the businessman is not satisfying and logical. Because this mistake do not make only the boy and his father were borne, the million people bore it too. With the foreshadowing, the look of boy for the businessman was a staring. It was just like a curious look; but it was also a vague look. The author arranges the causal connections between events are clear and logical…

At the very beginning of the story, the background itself brings us the sad and gloomy atmosphere of the “night express” which “stopped at the small station of Fabriano and continue their journey by the small-fashioned local joining the main line with Sulmona”. Even when the dawn came, it only made the view more clearly for us to see how tragic the passengers became. By using such words like “mourning, moaning, weakly, death-white, shy, uneasy, hide her face”, the author completely directly defined how disastrous their situations even though we readers have not known yet. By accident, all of the passengers “in this stuffy and smoky second-class carriage” were the parents of soldiers who sent to the front in war. Their sons were died or wounded, which made the parents suffered the sadness, loneliness, bitterness and wretchedness inside each of them. Definitely because of suffering from that hurt, the man in the story muttered “Nasty world!” After…

Than the description of her wife follows: she was fine and had skin like marble. The family was very interesting. It was unusual for her, and she was even getting ashamed, because thought that looked like a lazy lady. And several times, walking in the dusk, she saw ghosts. But after she told this to the master, he was not sympathetic. The master and his wife did not believe in the dead.…
