Howard Arkley and his own artwork provides a different view and perception of art using airbrush techniques to gather people’s attention and attraction to his artwork. He transforms boring suburban landscapes and houses into exciting paintings. They have…
He is known for his still life paintings. The piece located at the Muskegon Museum of Art is a small arrangement of fruit on a table. The background is a plain grey color and the table that the fruit is all sitting on is a dark greyish black marble one. In the center of the picture is the display of fruit. The arrangement of fruit appears to have a light shone on it, causing it to stand out even more against the dark table and background. There are both white and black grapes, peaches, a pear, two plumbs, some small red berries and some leaves on a stem that I am assuming are part of a grape vine. Some of the leaves are completely green, others are like those in the fall that are on their way from green to red. Every color is present in the picture is present. White grapes, the red berries and the red on the edges of the leaves, orange in the leaves and on the peaches, yellow in the leaves and the peaches, the green stems and the leaves sprouting from them, blue and purple in the grapes that fades into the same shade of black that is the…
Georgia O’ Keeffe is a famous female artist from the early 1900’s. She was considered part of the modern art era. My mother recommended I write this paper on O’Keeffe because she felt she was such a tremendous and timeless artist. She is considered to be an abstract artist who had the extraordinary skill of taking an everyday object, enlarging it to a certain focal point creating a new abstract view (Felder 37). This caught my attention because of the current project we are drawing. Art has never been a strong area for me. However, I am really learning to appreciate what it brings to the world. I am drawing a still life currently of a heel. Although it is a lot more modern than many of the drawings O’Keefe has done, it still has a lot of similar aspects, such as the focusing in on one specific piece of something. O’Keeffe depicted scenes of flowers, landscapes, and still life’s. Often her work contained “richly colored forms, abstract shapes, flowers, buildings, bones, hills, trees, clouds, sky, and stones (Castro 1). These ingredients garnered her with admirers and a legacy for a new style of painting. We have many pictures of landscape shots and close ups of specific flowers in my home, and I absolutely adore them because of their calmness. During the latter half of O’Keeffe’s career, she moved to the American southwest. This area became the main subject of her paintings, making some of her most celebrated work.…
Wayne Thiebaud is an extraordinary artist because he revolutionized Post Modern art. He did so by inspiring other artists to utilize a variety of new techniques in their works. He painted from his imagination and from memories unique to his childhood. His subject matter involved creating simplicity out of complex daily objects. Thiebaud was born in 1920 in Mesa, Arizona, but at age nine moved with his family to Long Beach, California. Although Thiebaud sadly grew up during the Great Depression, he still had time to paint and realized he had a talent for art. He had always wanted to become an artist but told everyone, “Being an artist is very rare, there aren’t many people who achieve it.” (Goldstein 4) Wayne Thiebaud is one of the hardest working artists of the Modernism era, and he is best known for his paintings of cakes, bakeries, and deli counters.…
The Tellus Museum is a great place to visit, no matter fall, winter, summer, or spring.…
For the first assignment in Instructor Laude’s Art 100 class, the class had to visit the Brooklyn Museum’s Egypt Exhibit on the 3rd floor. Where we chose a work of art each student thought was interesting and writes a paper describing and analyzing the art work. The work of art that I chose is the Anthropoid Coffin of the Priest Thothirdes. The reason I found this artifact interesting because I wonder why the museum felt they had to put a dead body to lay in the middle of the hallway.…
His artwork depicts Jews in the Holocaust. This particular drawing is portraying Jewish women. The Identity immediately caught my attention. The drawing looks very realistic. For example, the facial expressions of the women show their pain and despair.…
His art is focused more on the common man and everyday realities of life like most work at this time. In The…
I truly enjoyed the paintings of Robert S. Duncanson. To me, Duncanson’s landscape paintings are powerfully attractive to the eye. I find it interesting that he taught himself about art. He did this by lots of studying and copying engravings of famous European paintings. Before long, he was titled the best landscape painter in the west and being the first black to receive international recognition. Duncanson’s first large income came from Nicholas Longworth, who of this time was one of the most wealthiest entrepreneurs in the country and known as one of the most prominent are patrons and abolitionists. Duncanson’s eight murals were rediscovered in the early 1900’s, which were mostly in the style of Hudson River School. Which is a label that was used since the late 1800’s that signifies a group of artists who specialized in landscape paintings. Out of Duncanson’s rediscovered paintings, I liked the salon painting (large-scale history paintings) of Land of the Lotus Eaters from 1861. This was the work that ultimately earned him international fame. This landscape painting portrays a panoramic view of lush tropical land overgrown with delicately rendered exotic…
This beautiful piece of art was inspired by Yosemite National Park. The nature and wildlife is a beautiful picture to be painted. You cannot see his brush strokes or lines in this painting but you can see how he integrated the colors so well to bring this picture to life to make it look almost real. It too looks like a photograph taken when it is really a painting.…
After visiting the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, I will write about four art works. The first one is called Salome Receiving the Head of St. John the Baptist by Andrea Solario. The work is very colorful, and it shows chiaroscuro with the dark background and light on the faces of Salome and John the Baptist. The focal point is on John’s head. This is one of Solario’s most notable works, and the figure style is influenced by Leonardo Da Vinci. The story behind the painting is that Herodias had a quarrel with John the Baptist, and would have killed him herself. Instead, her daughter, Salome, danced for Herod and he was so pleased that he said he would give her anything she asked for. She asked for John the Baptist’s head on a platter at her mother’s urging. I believe I was interested in this work because I already knew about the subject matter, but I don’t think you have to know a lot about the art before entering the museum to be interested in it.…
I chose James Rosenquist for my artist shirt collection because of his use of incredibly bright and fun colors. Tim Murphy…
The Brooklyn Museum’s view of the portrait shows eighteenth-century mixed-race colonial elite of the island of Dominica in the West Indies. When first seeing this painting you can see the fine detail of how it was painted. Brunias was sure to pay attention to detail of clothings and face and yet still keep in mind the body language in which everyone was protrayed. The two women are shown accompanied by their mother and their children, along with eight African servants, as they walk on the grounds of a sugar plantation, one of the agricultural estates that were Dominica's chief source of wealth . Brunias documented colonial women of color as privileged and prosperous. The two wealthy sisters are distinguished from their mother and servants…
The work of art that I chose is Jeff Davies, an oil painting painted in 1976 by Jerome Paul Witkin. It depicts a man, presumably named Jeff Davies, standing and taking up the entire frame of the picture. He is wearing a plain tee shirt which is stretched over and exposing a bit of his protruding stomach, a pair of worn jeans, a huge down coat, and a hat. He stands in a plain, dirty-looking room. At the very bottom of the painting is the edge of a table and a mostly empty plate. Everything about Jeff Davies says manliness: his burly stature, his graying beard, his dirty work clothes. His hands are stuffed in his pockets, he's frowning, he's rolling one eye and the other is squeezed shut. The way that he stands in front of his plate with no chair in sight makes me think that this man doesn't sit down or stay still for long. And yet, the flaws of Jeff Davies that are depicted make the picture seem completely authentic, holding nothing back from the viewers. However, this painting was painted by Jerome Paul Witkin, he is New York painter, born in 1939. Since he was born around the time of the Great Depression, it makes sense that Witkin's work should reflect social realism, depicting a working class man as its subject. Witkin "believes that moral values are as important as formal or aesthetic ones." So maybe it wasn't so far-fetched of me to think of Jeff Davies as an honest man and the hero of the painting, instead of just its subject.…
Here is an image. I do consider the following picture art because of its elements and formats, its influence from the Northern Renaissance, its significance to the Impressionism Movement, and its similarities to the Egyptian movement.…
