Shouldice Hospital Case
Group #8 Assignment #1: Shouldice Hospital case 1. How does the hospital's operations strategy support its business strategy? 2. How well is the hospital currently utilizing its beds? 3. Evaluate the effects of the following two alternatives on the utilization of the bed capacity. a) a. Adding operations on Saturday (assuming that 30 operations would still be performed each day). b) b. Increasing the number of beds by 50 percent (assuming that the hospital would increase the number of operations performed each day and perform operations five days per week with the same number of operations per day). 4. What is your recommendation to the hospital (consider the two options above and the option of no change on capacity)? …show more content…
This conclusion can be adequately drawn after using the capacity utilization rate (capacity used divided by the best operating level) to show how close to its best operating level Shouldice Hospital is operating. The best operating level is the capacity for which the process was designed, and is the volume of output at which unit cost is minimized. The best operating level remains constant on a daily basis throughout the course of the week and is equal to ninety beds a day. The capacity used on the other hand somewhat fluctuates throughout the seven day period. On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday the capacity utilization rate of the beds is 100% (90 capacity used/ 90 best operating level). However, on Monday and Friday the capacity utilization rate is 66.7% (60 capacity used /90 best operating level). Finally, on Saturday and Sunday the capacity utilization rate falls to 33.3% (30 capacity used/ 90 best operating level). By taking the total capacity used, and the total best operating level over the seven day period we get a capacity utilization rate of 71.4% (450 capacity used/ 630 best operating level). With a capacity utilization rate of 71.4% it is hard to argue that Shouldice Hospital is not currently utilizing its beds in an adequate manner based on their current operating …show more content…
Assuming the number of operations is increased to 45 per day, by increasing the number of operations from 6 operations per room per day, to 9 per room per day, would allow for the additional 15 operations per day. The hospitals bed (capacity) utilization rate on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday would be 100% (135/135), on Monday and Friday it would be 66.67% (90/135), and on Saturday and Sunday it would be 33.33% (45/135). This option leaves the hospital’s bed (capacity) utilization rate to be the same as it currently is with operations five days a week, with 90 beds and 30 operations per day. But, it would allow for 15 more operations to be performed per day five days a week, for a total of 45 operations per day, which ultimately makes the hospital more money. The hospital needs to consider if the increase in profits, the increase in beds and the increase in operations can be handled without changing its business

The assembly line is budgeted to produce six work boots in a 40 hour week. This is equivalent to 480 minutes of production time in one eight hour day. The line can make 48 boots in an eight hour shift. This leaves a cycle time per boot of 10 minutes. In order to figure how many workstations are appropriate for the cycle time of 10 minutes, I calculated the total task time of the boots by the cycle time. The total task time is 46 minutes, divided by the cycle time of 10 minutes; leaves minimum necessary workstations of 4.6 or 5. This gives the production line the most efficiency. The assembly line was previously working with 8 stations with the longest cycle time of 10 minutes. There were several stations that had over 5 minutes of idle time. Idle time increases waste through not using employee’s time efficiently. By combining several of the work stations less idle time was created making the process more efficient. The fewer work stations also decreases the amount of time used to move items from station to station which is additional wasted time in production. When figuring the efficiency rate of the assembly line I multiplied the number of stations by the longest cycle time, and then divided that by the overall task time to make a pair of boots. The original process of the assembly line was operating at 58% efficiency. When I recalculated this using the 5 stations with a cycle time of 10 minutes, the efficiency rate was 92%. This is a significant increase. It would be recommended that the employees cross train in performing the tasks to help keep the process moving…

Our first plan (Plan A) includes hiring 4 new employees in January to cover the 2100 units of demand but firing them in February, we will fire these additional employees because the production would be covered. In March, April, and May will fire 4, 3, 3, employees respectively. By doing so, the labor costs are significantly reduced and the unit demand will be covered. In June we neither hire nor fire because our units of demand are covered. However, in July, and August, unit demand picks up and we will hire 5, and 7 employees respectively. In September we fire 4 employees and October we fire 2 employees cutting our labor cost, but still reaching our unit demand. In November we hire 7 employees due to the increase of Holiday sales, and in December we hire 6 employees. By doing so we have a Gross profit of $1,125,189…

Elijah Heart Center is experiencing a cash flow problem, to help improve this dilemma, the goal is to save the Hospital $900,000 in the first year. The simulation provided five options for cost cutting at the hospital with only two of the options available to select from, in hopes of the best result. The five options for cost cutting are reducing agency staff, downsizing staff, reducing benefits, changing the skill mix, and reducing length of stay for the patients. The best two options for the hospital to reach their goal in my opinion are, reducing the agency staff and changing the skill mix. Reducing agency staff is a smart choice because it can eliminate contracted salaries which cost a…

    a. Hospital – Making scheduling decisions is one of the most important factors in the decision making process of hospital management. The Healthcare industry has faced many issues over the years, but they have worked hard to create better scheduling and make better decisions. They need scheduling decisions for the employees, personnel, reduction of cost and medical errors, and patient services. I think the main resources of Hospital management are the Doctors and Nursing staffs. How many hours these Doctors and Nurses’ work determines the quality of medical care? “Variable staffing and shift scheduling policies are the main scheduling decisions taken by the hospital management’ (Maenhout and Vanhoucke, 2008).
