Abstract:
Shouldice hospital has been the best service provider for treating hernias and been in demand since a long time. However, due to the limited capacity of 89 beds the hospital is not able to meet the market demand which is causing it to lose its market share and success. The main constraints mentioned in this case study are the number of beds in the hospital for patients and the number of surgeons to operate. In order to remove the above two limitations, Shouldice hospital should come up with a single solution that can help them to expand their facility without losing the current service

This method became more popular due to its speedy recovery and positive surgical results. Dr. Shouldice after serving for the army started his hospital due to the increase in demand for the treatment. Shouldice method involved operating hernia under local anesthesia and pain killers. The method helped the patients to move from the operating table to their rooms and move freely immediate after operation to talk to other patients. The patients have dinner together as a routine so that they can discuss and build up their confidence. The whole process was so successful with 140,000 happy customers due to the positive experience, speedy recovery and lower recurrence percent of 0.8. The technique was popular among the surgeons as it allowed them to have time for their families, daily activities and good wages. The technique was popular among nurses due to the good wages and time for counseling deeds. Though the hospital was running with good success rate, it had its own further challenges with an accumulation of 1200 patients and available resources.     The Chief of Vascular surgery, Dr. Blauhard, strode confidently down the central corridor of the operating theaters. Passing the open heart surgery rooms and the new hybrid theater he knew that his patient would be going to sleep in room 12, his room. The patient was lucky to have him as her surgeon. He had been vice-chairman of vascular surgery at a major university and had published extensively in his chosen field. He was viewed as a star. But he was not respected or revered or even liked by the staff at his new hospital. In fact, his behavior at the new hospital had been outrageous. He yelled. He criticized. He threw instruments. But prior to prepping, the patient was rolled from the supine position into the prone position, effectively shifting the right leg to the left side of the operating table. As such, and with no one saying anything, the left leg was prepped and draped. The wrong leg was prepped and draped. But no one said anything. A surgical timeout was held but no one spoke up.     In the book, In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto, author Michael Pollan commences his tale with a few straightforward words: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants”. In his introduction, An Eater’s Manifesto, Pollan discusses how the dietetic wisdom that was passed down from older generations has been heavily tainted by “nutritional science and food industry marketing” (Pollan, 2008). The first volume of the book entitled, The Age of Nutritionism”, delves into this problem and helps uncover the cause of today’s “nutritional confusion and anxiety” (Pollan, 2008). Nowadays, it is not uncommon to have “edible foodlike substances” displayed in every aisle of the grocery store with all products promoting some kind of nutritional benefit from their consumption. These dietary facts are often modified to showcase dietary benefits that are barely present in the food product, if present at all. With such prevalent misinformation, today’s society has become so overly concerned with nutrient enriched food that people have either forgotten or are unaware of the importance of the fundamentals. Pollan further explains that humanity has become “a nation of orthorexics” meaning that people have developed “an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating” centred on the theory of nutritionism (Pollan, 2008). Chronic diseases that have the highest death rate such as obesity, coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer, can be attributed to the “Western diet” which consists of “highly processed foods and refined grains; the use of chemicals to raise plants and animals in huge monocultures; the superabundance of cheap calories of sugar and fat produced by modern agriculture; and the narrowing of the biological diversity of the human diet to a tiny handful of staple crops, notably wheat, corn, and soy” (Pollan, 2008).
