Should Women Should Be Leaders In Society?
Whether or not women should be leaders in society is a highly debated topic and one that the Bible gives mixed signals about. The Bible tells us in Judges 4:1 about how Deborah led Israel and received God’s blessing. The Bible also states in 1 Timothy 2:11-12 “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet” (1 Timothy 2:11-12, NIV). This provides some conflicting viewpoints on whether women should be leaders or not in today's society. In my personal opinion, I fail to see the gap between male or female leaders. I believe men are born with certain abilities, and women are born with certain abilities, but I do not see leadership being an ability that one has and one does not. Throughout my life, I had been influenced and led by many “people,” I have never really taken the time to think nor care if the person was male or female. I want to lead by someone with character, integrity, and inspiration, regardless of gender. I believe that the Bible intends for women to not be …show more content…
To some, the Bible’s viewpoint is far different, and to others it shares similarities. To begin, I want to discuss women leaders that are present in the Bible. In Exodus 15:20-21 the Bible discusses Miriam leading women to sing and worship the Lord, stating “ Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing. Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.”” (Exodus 15:20-21, NIV). This is a great example of women leadership displayed in the Bible. It seems in my opinion that people are quick to dismiss the idea of women being leaders in the

Since the 1990’s and what has been called the “third wave of feminism,”1 men and women have been advocating gender equality in society.2 The theological implications of this have resulted with the question of whether or not limits should be placed on the leadership roles of women in the church. There are two primary views concerning this topic. First, there is the complementarian or traditionalist view which limits the role of women in leadership positions in the church. Second, there is the egalitarian view, characterized by a belief in the equality of all people, which believes that no limits should be placed on the role of women in leadership in the church.     Christian women during the Greco-Roman period, according to the church fathers, were allowed few privileges.     Carbonell, J.L., & Castro, Y. (2008). The impact of a leader model on high dominant women’s self-selection for leadership. Sex Roles ,58,776-783. This study had women observe a leader model of either gender model a task they would have to complete. The study looked at effects of gender role model in the decision of high dominant women to be leaders, given a masculine task to complete with a male co-worker. The hypothesis states that women would become leaders at a higher rate when a woman model is given rather than a male. The research took a total of 190 students: 95 women and 95 men. Each individual was given the California Psychological Inventory, measuring: impression, communication, and dominance. This study looked at dominance in particular. Only 15 pairs were exposed to women models. The study observed 2 groups to support or reject their hypothesis. Focused groups were made of high dominant woman paired with a low dominant man with a female model, and high dominant woman paired with a low dominant man with a male model. A chi square analysis showed a correlation between leader model and leader development, “The results are that 60% of women took the leader role when given a woman model compared to 20% in male model” (Castro, 2008). The study concluded in the presence of a female model, high dominant individual would be the leader. The gender of the leader model did not affect leadership for males. I believe this study shows importance of woman leader models in professional fields. The lack of exposure of woman leaders for women reduces the chances that they will take on leadership roles.…
