Should Women Be Allowed In The Military Essay
Military Only For Men? You’re Funny. Many people throughout the world believe that the government should not permit women to be in the military. They believe that members of the military should only be of the male gender because years ago that is how it worked. Women stayed at home, cooking, cleaning, and making babies; men were drafted into the military to serve their country. Their argument is invalid as times today are changed. Women should be allowed in the military because they are capable of the same things as men, the military knows no gender, and America needs everybody that is capable of defending our country.
People say that women are not physically capable of joining the military because men and women are not built the same. However, that may be true; it does not mean that women are not capable. A physician, who is aboard the USS Tarawa, believes women at sea complicate the job (Book). This is an opinion from just one person, who obviously does not believe that women are capable of being in the service. Javery states, “When a man comes to a sick call with belly pain, it is probably one of two things--flu or appendicitis. When a woman comes in, it can be one of 50 things” (Book). The military is supposed to be a place where everybody can defend their country so that there will be equality. What is the point of that if there is inequality present in the military? There are mixed-gender police teams and firefighters everywhere who are capable of bonding (Wekesser 62). People in the civilian world are able to work with both genders, why can the people in the military not do the same?     Speaking from a woman who is in the military I’m going to elaborate on why I think that women shouldn’t serve in combat positions. It’s scientifically proven that women doesn’t physically perform at the same level as men. For an example, the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) is broken down into two categories’, women and men and in which they have different age groups in which women are held to a lower standards than men. The APFT have different requirements when you turn a certain age meaning your body can’t handle as much as it did when you were younger. Same thing with women and men you can’t hold them to the same standard when their body is constructed differently. Physically a woman skeletal system is less dense and prone to have more breakages than a man. Psychological concerns are that women would be place on the front line and then get pregnant to escape from combat. Another reason I think women shouldn’t go into some combat positions such as sniper school is because you have to be aware that they camp out for days, but a woman can’t do that especially if they are on their menstrual cycle.
