Should We Celebrate Columbus Day

Within the town of Shrewsbury, I believe that us citizens, should not celebrate Columbus Day. Many misconceptions surrounding the man and the holiday, cause us to believe that this man not only discovered America, but that he was also very peaceful when he arrived in the Caribbean. Although, this is not true, many facts help support that Christopher Columbus, in fact did not discover the continent that we live on today. As a child, many kids are taught that Christopher Columbus founded this land, and that "Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492", however, many facts about this man are left out. These facts are important to the case that I am presenting, on why we should not celebrate the day honoring this man. Several ideas support this case include topics surrounding his expedition and what he did when he arrived on land. After reading this essay and the following paragraphs I assure you, that an agreement will be made to the following arguments I will present.
One of the most common misconceptions about this day is that he discovered the "New World", which is far from true. Many civilizations and settlers had already been living in these lands, as well, centuries before Christopher Columbus many explorers had landed in the Americas. So instead of celebrating a man that killed, raped and tortured, why don't we follow in the footsteps of other cities around the United States. Similar to these cities, Shrewsbury, as a town should a create a new day, dedicated to those effected by Christopher Columbus after he had arrived on those islands centuries ago. We should stop remembering a horrible man, and begin to commemorate the indigenous peoples, that are now extinct because of
