Should Uniforms Be Taught In Schools Essay

At age 13, Abigail Smith was a middle school girl. She was inspired by the many sublime models and loved wearing the clothes that they wore. They were exemplars to her. No matter what people said, for many were in disapproval, she continued wearing what she wanted. Her dreams were to one day become a model and wear her own line of clothing, and to inspire others. A few years down the road, she was out in the town that she lived in, and she was stopped by someone of celebrity looks. This person said she had an amazing taste in clothing. After a while of talking, she was offered a job for a modeling business. Her expressing herself was a critical part of being recognized and for this, her dreams came true. She was finally a model.
School uniforms do not allow students to express themselves, and schools should not require students to wear them. Self-expression is an important and necessary part of life. Kent J. Fisher wrote, “Our biggest problem with schools uniform policy is the anti-individuality message it sends. The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada says, “Conformity to conventional standards of appearance does not seem a justifiable part of the educational process. Clothing choices are a crucial part of self-expression.”(Procon 1) The ACLUN also states that, “Allowing students to pick out their own clothes in the morning send an empowering message that a student is a maturing person who is entitled to the most basic self-determination.”(Procon 1) Schools can either have school uniforms, which deny them of their most basic freedoms, or they can allow students to express themselves freely.
Having school uniforms in place takes student’s rights away and leaves them without individuality in schools. We are individuals, don’t uniform
