Should Dress Codes Be Outlawed In Schools?
Many of girls outfits and clothes are sexualized by dress codes. Boys are never told that their shoulders, legs,or stomachs are distracting or inappropriate. Clothing items such as leggings are outlawed by schools because they are seen as distracting to boys. Ripped Jeans are another violation of the dress code. Rips showing a small amount of skin on your knee vs. showing your whole knee and lower leg (how scandalous) in the shorts you change into. ”It is the responsibility of the administration to see that student dress is not extreme to the point of creating a disruption in the educational atmosphere”. (Planner) Administration uses their own personal opinions to decide what is appropriate and immodest. The opinion of 700 students should be weighted into account before people of an older generation decide what is modest, appropriate, and distracting for students. Shorts, which are not a violation of the dress code, show the majority of your leg. The planner state's,”Shorts and skirts must be mid-thigh length. If a garment contains a split or slit, the split or slit cannot be higher than the mid thigh.” Students can wear shorts and skirts that expose their leg as long they do not go above the mid thigh. Rips in the jeans only show a portion of the skin, and yet violate the dress code. If students can wear a skirt with a slit up to their mid thigh, they should be able to wear jeans with rips up to the mid -thigh. Not all violations all the dress code are bad. Dress codes banning articles of clothing the refer to drugs, weapons, alcoholic drinks, sex, and others that support profanity violence or illegal substances should be banned for the school environment. Shorts and skirts that are excessively short are understandably also violating the dress code. Clothes that drag on the ground are prohibited for safety reasons. People could step on the fabric dragging and cause the other person to

School dress codes are used for the purpose of equality and the opportunity for higher learning. There is a belief that what students wear can affect and distract others from acquiring the education they come to school for. While some clothing articles may seem disruptive in a classroom environment it is taking away the personal identity of students. Not being able to wear things that have been seen as inappropriate for school has left students striped of their individuality, feeling discriminated for their bodies, and suffering lack of education when dismissed for their clothing. When a female student has a bigger chest and wears a lower cut shirt, it is more likely that she will be dress-coded; leading to a 1st violation warning, 2nd violation detention, 3rd violation Saturday school, and 4th violation in-school suspension. However, if another female with a smaller chest wore that exact…

I understand that school is a place for education and you should dress modest and you shouldn’t show up with your private parts coming out of your clothes, but women should have just as much amount of rights to wear what they please as men do. Equal rights should be practiced in every single school district, and boys should be disciplined just as harsh as girls are(for example when their pants hang so low you can see their underwear)(or when their muscle shirts cut so wide on the side that you can see their niple). Continuing to treat women like they should always cover up and be ashamed of their body can affect them in a negative way, mentally and even…

According to school boards majority of girls are all indecent, this creates girls to be allowed to only wear a few items of clothing without breaking the sacred dress code law. There are very specific rules about what us girls can and cannot wear. “Skirts, dresses and shorts cannot be more than 2 inches above the knee”, which means we are allowed to wear only long shorts. Sounds like an oxymoron if you ask me, because wouldn’t long shorts be pants? “All pants and shorts must be worn on the waist.” So this obviously means those who choose to wear their pants about their waist would be punished. “All tops should cover the top of shoulders and cover the entire body.” I don’t know what our school would do without the “shoulder showing” dress code rule, because honestly shoulder showing could really get crazy. I mean, us kids get so turned on by shoulders. “I am overwhelmed with lust every time a bare shoulder is in my presence. It’s a good thing we aren’t allowed to show our bare shoulders”, says a fellow Chiawana High School student. Who knows what would happen if we all walked around with bare shoulders all day. Also, since when does a shirt cover your entire body? I have never seen a head to toe shirt, unless you include ghost Halloween costumes made from cheap sheets. If this is the case then I’ve been violating the dress code for over 3 years, wearing shirts that only cover my torso, without even knowing it. How silly of me!…

To girls clothes are a way of expressing who they are at school which is hard for them to do with the school dress code saying they have to cover everything up. Many female student are complaining that they find the school dress code sexist. Why are bra straps, shoulders, knees, thighs, and mid section considered attractive and distracting? Even the male students have said that the think the dress code is often times unfair to the girls. (Jackson Brook, 16, a high school senior in Palo Alto, CA) says “The idea that a visible bra strap or a pair of leggings will prevent a teen boy from learning is absurd” . Dress codes are rules that the country has utilized for years. But are these rules necessary? They often suppress students’ individuality as well as students’ self-expression. At the same time these rules also discriminate and needlessly sexualize young women. Dress codes were put in place to establish a distraction-free environment for students. And yet, they are doing the opposite, and thus, modifying or eliminating them would be most logical.…

When schools have dress codes they usually have dress codes for boys and girls. But the dress codes for girls are always much more strict. The dress codes for girls are usually no leggings or sweatpants, tank tops, shorts, undergarments showing, or skirts that are shorter than fingertip length. But for boys for boys the dress codes are something like no baggy pants or inappropriate shirts. And most of the time they don’t get into much trouble for wearing something against the dress code like girls do.…

We all know the dress code well to much, preventing us from wearing what we want and not letting our real style shine through. Here at Kaneland there are dress codes that I believe are not needed. For one girl’s shoulders are supposed to not be shown but why is there such a huge deal about them. Is there something about shoulders that make them so bad that you can’t show them. In the hallways of Kaneland High School there are girls who are wearing an item of clothing or not enough clothing that goes against the code and they are told to change. How are you supposed to change if you have no clothes and the school clothes available are embarrassing because they never fit and you can tell that the student got in trouble for the clothing choices they made that morning.…

While just recently it was back to school season in America, which unfortunately meant that it was also a return to infuriating dress code enforcement in schools all across the US. It seems like the biggest concern for teachers is girls dressing against the dress code. It seems like no one really gives a second glance at boys who are sagging their pants (luckily no one really does that anymore) or wearing tanks that can expose most of their chest and shoulders.…

Dress codes. Dress codes are something that everyone has to deal with for almost their whole lives, but schools are where dress codes seem to be the most prominent. It seems that every couple of weeks a school has made the news because of their strict dress code or their punishments for breaking the dress code. As a teenage girl, the dress code is something that I have a love-hate relationship with. It can either limit what I can wear or make me thankful for giving me guidelines when I don’t know if something is appropriate enough to wear to school.…

Imagine a situation in which a girl is sent home for wearing yoga pants, but her boy classmate stays in class while wearing a skin tight “muscle shirt.” This situation happens too often in schools all over. The discrimination in this situation may seem obvious, but some might deem this as an appropriate and fair incident, where the female was rightfully punished for her inappropriate clothing. Situations like the before example, are often backed up by school dress codes, a code in which certain articles of clothing are regulated. Dress codes are in all schools, including private and public, middle and high schools; however, regardless of the kind of school, dress codes almost always target girls(9).…

“I’ve never seen a boy called out for his attire even though they also break the rules.” Maggie Sunseri said in a documentary she made and posted on YouTube. Female dress code has been a controversial topic for years. People say it’s fair, some say unfair, but they usually don't have to deal with it because most of them are adults. To broaden people's minds, it’s time to see it from a student's vision. School dress, specifically female, needs to be less restricting because it targets female and it's “distracting” boys and teachers.…

Ever wondered why your outfit wasn’t “school appropriate?” This issue of dress code has been discussed a great deal in the recent years over social media. Numerous people have been hurt or offended by what is seen as “inappropriate” or “misleading,” and the policing of what students are wearing is unfair and extremely sexist.
