Should Dress Codes Be Allowed In School?
Imagine you were going over an important assignment in class one day to then be taken out of class for seemingly no reason. Now imagine if that reason was simply for exposed knees and exposed collarbones on the dress you were wearing. This happens to girls everywhere, their education put second to their bodies. And their comfort and self expression taken from them in an environment they have to attend. This blatant sexism happens to young girls everywhere, they are treated like sexual objects not students. In the first place degrading young girls and treating them as objects in a school environment is sexism. When this happens it teaches young girls that their bodies are the only thing that people notice and teaches them it’s their fault and …show more content…
Many school administrators say the dress codes are to prepare students for the real world. And some agree boys should be taught not to stare, “There's no reason that schools can't teach both respecting oneself through proper dress and respecting others by not leering at them.”(Three) The schools don't want their students displaying inappropriate dress, they want to keep things modest and respectful. Many dress codes do in fact target men as well, saying the pants must stay at the waist and they should not were vulgar t-shirts. They inforce tank top rules on boys as well, and some places ban the use of gang colors and symbols. Dress codes are not the same for every school, some schools are very strict and conservative while others just ask you to not come to school in a …show more content…
A dress code can prepare students for future jobs and the dress code enforced there. Schools should teach boys not to stare, as well as teach girls modesty then a dress code would not need to be enforced. There are rules that target boys directly but their rules are more about inappropriate logos of tshirts, for girls on the other hand their rules target any piece of clothing on her, the rule can range form ‘it looks inappropriate” to exact measurements; also there are many more rules that target girls. Some schools are not strict about dress codes some simply say ‘no excessive skin’, but it affects girls everywhere that we’re being degraded that way. “To me, it’s not about being able to wear certain kinds of clothing,... It’s more about the message behind it…” (George) We don't want them to walk around school in bikinis we want them to wear the clothes that we don't have to be afraid we're going to be

The student handbook says that the dress code applied to both boys and girls, but then says things such as "...shirts and blouses should cover the shoulders and yoga pants are not permitted..." (student hand book page 26). Things like that are aimed towards girls. Why should girls be punished for being comfortable? Girls should be taught to embrace their bodies without consequences.…

I am rarely ever the one to post, especially about my issues, but I am speaking for many. While the discussion and arguments about school dress code are going on so isn’t downgrading, stereotyping, and bullying. Many comments have been made by people who are stereotyping others for instance cheerleaders. We are being stereotyped as preppy, snobby, slutty, “the populars”, and the list goes on. We are being used in examples like “The people who wear intentional holey jeans and revealing clothing are “the populars” and cheerleaders.” And “The cheerleaders wear skirts hiked up their butts and push their boobs up to the sky, but I got in trouble for wearing the clothes I did, this is favoritism.” This being all untrue is stereotyping, downgrading…

In any gym class during the day, there will probably be a ton of boys wearing cut off shirts that are very revealing of the guys’ chests, but no one ever says a word about it, But no one would ever would be okay with a girl wearing a shirt that is revealing. I know in today's society it is wrong for a girl to show her chest, and I’m not saying that it is, but it shouldn’t be okay for boys in schools to show parts of their body that girls cannot. If guys can show off their whole chest, then maybe girls should be able to too. It it is unfair that girls always get pulled out of the classroom because their clothes are “distracting,” It is very unfair to make a girl leave the classroom to change her shirt, or shorts. Guys shouldn’t get a better education just because girls wear different…

The purpose of the dress code is to have a better understanding that students do not come here to show off their style, but to come here to learn and get a better education. Students fail to realize the difference between dressing for success and dressing to impress. Dress code is nothing new to our society; many jobs require you to wear certain types of clothing or a uniform. Therefore, these schools are simply preparing their students to have a successful and bright future. Students should be more concerned about what they can learn, not what they can or cannot wear. Education is what motivates student’s people to the top of the platform their wardrobe. “Be careless in your dress if you will, but keep a tidy soul (Twain)”. Students should beware, their future will not depend on…

Truly there are still people in this world who don’t take the gender equality and feminists acts seriously. Girls in this day and age are still being told they are not allowed, or do not have the capability of doing something because “you’re a girl” as if that should explain to a ten year old girl why she can’t play tackle football with her brothers. This destroys the psychological thinking of a young girl and makes her think that she has these limitations because “she’s a girl”. Limitations such as these can cause long psychological damage and lower a girl’s self esteem.…

I understand that school is a place for education and you should dress modest and you shouldn’t show up with your private parts coming out of your clothes, but women should have just as much amount of rights to wear what they please as men do. Equal rights should be practiced in every single school district, and boys should be disciplined just as harsh as girls are(for example when their pants hang so low you can see their underwear)(or when their muscle shirts cut so wide on the side that you can see their niple). Continuing to treat women like they should always cover up and be ashamed of their body can affect them in a negative way, mentally and even…

Dress codes are rules that the country has utilized for years. But are these rules necessary? They often suppress students’ individuality as well as students’ self-expression. At the same time these rules also discriminate and needlessly sexualize young women. Dress codes were put in place to establish a distraction-free environment for students. And yet, they are doing the opposite, and thus, modifying or eliminating them would be most logical.…

Dress codes have been the center of debates in schools for many years, and it probably will continue to be that way. Many will claim that dress codes are usually discriminating against one gender or one ethnicity. For example, the main people who are called out for inappropriate dress code are girls. Also, rules like “no gangster attire” are implied to be for African Americans. The main argument, however, for people who support dress codes is that it allows students to be prepared for their future careers. How students dress determines their success. Colleges that have a dress code usually implement that dress code so students know how they must dress for interviews and real world jobs, but over the years this objective has changed. Many Universities are implementing this idea of dressing for success, but there are some discrepancies. When looking at different universities all of them have different rules that make them unique. Colleges like Benedict and Bob Jones have strict dress codes, while colleges like Louisburg allow more freedom. One thing seems to stand out: there is no solid answer for what to wear and what not to wear. Many dress codes…

Students with enforced dress codes tend to be more educated than those students who go to schools without enforced dress codes because they tend to attend school more. According to research, students that have uniforms have better attendance because they don't have to worry about what they are wearing to school because everyone is wearing the same style of clothing. No one is there to criticize them about how their shirt is ugly or how their shoes don't match what they're wearing. One of the reasons why students don't go to school is because they don't have the right clothes to fit in or be cool and they don't want to get bullied by the “cool” kids.…

Now that doesn’t mean if the dress is shorter than your knee because cute clothes that are long are hard to find nowaday. To go along with that would be short shorts, if your arms are longer than your shorts I don’t see a probable with that as long as you don’t have anything sticking/coming out of them. With colder weather coming there are not a lot of problems with the dress code but when it starts to get warmer and girls want to pull out their shorts and tank tops because of how hot it is but if students do that it will be dress coded. The main reason for girls dress code rules is because of the guys not being able to control themselves but they will have to learn to in the real world even if their not matured all the way. Placing these rules so the guys can’t do anything is not preventing anything it is just covering it up well at school. The main issue is not letting the students express their feelings through their choices in clothing. This is highschool this is time for the students to be able to express themselves and try different styles without having to worry about being…
