Should College Be Free
What if, in the future, a scientist finds the cure for cancer? Cancer would be less of a problem than it is today. Now, what would happen if that same scientist did not find the cure for cancer because he or she couldn’t go to college because they could not afford to go to college? That brings up the question, should college be free? The question has been brought up many times in lectures in different countries around the world. Even now, in this country many presidential debates often consist of the question should public college be free for all aspiring college students. College should be free because it would make college more affordable for students, the cost of college is rising, and college would be better for the American economy.

It was reported by College Board, “the average published tuition for in-state students at public universities–which represent 45% of full-time undergraduates–rose to $9,410 this year, up 2.9% from last year”(Clark). Now add that there are a lot of people in the U.S. that are already on a tight budget, because of the cost of their tuition and them wanting to pay it off as soon as possible, will only make their budgets tighter. The percentage of the cost of college is getting higher, making it that much more difficult to try to afford college. It would not benefit anyone if the price of tuition was to rise year after year every year. The cost of tuition has risen due to states lowering their funding because of college's need for paying their professors, making new athletic centers, and maintaining their luxurious dorms.
