Should College Athletes Have to Stay All 4 Years?
In every sport there’s always that one guy, the one who was born to play, the one the entire team looks for when they need a win. The Los Angeles Lakers have Kobe Bryant and now Dwight Howard, the Miami Heat have Lebron James, and the Milwaukee Bucks have Brandon Jennings. There have been these athletes and many more who fit into that category. These three men are in an elite group of their own, each of them didn’t attend a single class in college, and as a matter of fact they didn’t play a single minute of college basketball. Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard and Brandon Jennings skipped college on their road to stardom in the NBA. Teens in professional sports have come in all shapes and sizes, and it has been a debated topic for many years. The debate dates back to when basketball superstar Wilt Chamberlain attempted to forgo his senior year of college to enter the NBA draft. Some of these players have turned out to be busts, others hall of famers. Some are the face of the franchise and others end up quitting early. Teens should be able to play in professional sports because restrictions are not put on ages for other jobs, or even other sports, these talented kids should be able to play with the bigger and better competition, all while avoiding getting hurt by other players.
It is understood that teens should not be able to leave college early or even skip it entirely to enter professional sports. In the article Teenage Athletes in Professional Sports it states, “Young athletes are often unprepared for the physical demands in top-tier sports competition.” In 2007, basketball star Greg Oden left Ohio State University after his freshman year to enter the NBA draft. Oden was selected as the first overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2007 and since then has only played a total of 82 games. He has sat out about a season and a half due to injuries, Oden has suffered from a broken wrist, a torn knee, a twisted ankle and a sprained foot since leaving

    "Should College Athletes Get Paid To Play" Forget about the game-winning touchdown, forget about the cheerleader girlfriend, and forget the pageantry. What about the hard earned money college athletes will never see and earned? In the world of college sports its win or go home, and to the winners go the spoils. Most successful college sports teams rake in millions of dollars in revenue. Steve Spurrier, the coach for the Florida Gators signed a six year contract where he would make a little over 2.5 million dollars a year not including certain benefits like a free car for his wife. So with the institutions and coaches getting rich off their player who is to say that the player does not deserve a share of the wealth? Most college athletes get around 200-250 dollars a month for living expenses and spending money, this is very small compared to the student who has time to work. Some people say that athletes get paid by having a scholarship but if you look at the ulterior motive behind scholarships I think people would change their minds. Coaches try to get players who they think have the talent to make them win and to persuade them to come to their school they try to give them scholarships. So the whole idea behind a scholarship is to lure the student to come to your school. Scholarships are just a recruitment tactic. Don't confuse what I am saying though I don't think college players should be making millions of dollars but there should be a set salary for all players no matter if they make the highlights everyday or ride the pine. The players should make at least what a person who works making eight dollars and hour would make in a year, and that is a modest salary too. Every player of a college sport puts in countless man-hours of work to their sport instead of going out and getting a job they have to devote all their time to this.     Recently in the news, there was a report on the five University of Kentucky basketball players that decided to enter the NBA draft after only their freshmen season. Sure, they were told of the millions of dollars they could make in professional sports, but were they given the odds of them even reaching that big payday? From picks 5-10 in the draft, the success rate of the player becoming a league average starter is about 30%, then for the rest of the first round, picks 11-30 have around a 10% chance (Thread:15 year Basketball Analysis). But even after given the odds, most of the players will choose to enter the draft because if they continue to play and attend college, they could hurt themselves and lose out on all the money. But what happens when the athlete doesn’t make it? Then he becomes just another person in his early 20s without a college degree, looking for a job. But what if colleges were to offer the players an added incentive to stay, promise a type of salary so the athlete could make some extra money to help with his tuition cost, maintain a social life, and stay in school to finish his degree? Because even on a full scholarship, it does not cover the entire cost, the IRS taxes the scholarship leaving the player about $3,200-$3,500 short a year. This is why paying college athletes makes sense, because it will help keep young adults in school to finish their degrees and help them financially to achieve a better future. College athletes deserve to be paid because sports take up about 40 hours a week, which could translate to a full time job. So why should the players not get paid for doing his job? That is the question that is keeping most student-athletes from completing their education and chancing not only professional sports, but their futures as well.…

    Are college athlete’s players or employees? The idea of paying a college athlete appears to be outrageous to some. The thought of giving someone money for something they have chosen to do may not appear to be fair. The greatest concern is where to draw the line. Should the decision be based on the amount of money and fame the program generates? Why should athletes be treated special and receive compensation for their contribution to the school? One major factor is that athletes make numerous sacrifices beyond that of a nonathletic student. Many athletes can’t seek employment to help offset the expenses of college because they are on the field or court for the majority of their day. Their time and effort is devoted to that of the school, thus potentially sacrificing their education. In many cases, athletes don’t receive funding for college, which means that not only are they paying financially, but physically to compete. If the athletes are fortunate enough to receive a scholarship, usually that is the only benefit. This in turn leads to taking out loans and having to look for other scholarships or sources of compensation, but this doesn’t stop them from being involved in the teams’ activities.     Should college athletes be paid? This question has been the subject of debate for many years. There are pros and cons to both sides of the issue, but college athletes deserve to be paid for several reasons. One reason is that college athletes are not allowed to work and earn money when they are playing a sport. Another is that college athletes can contribute to a winning team that attracts fans and raises ticket sales and can bring in money through sponsorships and merchandising.     In my opinion, I think that Division 1-A basketball and football players should be getting paid a certain amount on the side for all the good they bring into a school. The proposal that I would like to propose is to pay the students on a per minute basis due to the fact that there are some superstars on a team that play most of the game and other players who do not play at all. I feel as if the better players on a team deserve more than a player who doesn’t play at all. Furthermore, I would pay the players on a $20-$25 dollar per-minute basis. For example, if a star basketball athlete played 30 minutes in a game, he would bring in about 600-750 dollars per game. For the players who receive minimal (6 mins and under) playing time during a game to no playing time at all will receive a minimum of $120. The same would go for the football players at a Division-1A school, as they will be paid on a per-minute basis as well. I have many reasons as to why I feel this proposal is correct route to take and will clearly explain my reasoning in the upcoming paragraphs…
