Many people believe that the legalization of medical marijuana, or cannabis, is an excuse for “pot heads” to get high legally and that they have no legitimate medical reason to have a medical marijuana card prescribed to them from a physician. Cannabis has been noted to have been effective in treating some symptoms of disease or illnesses such as pain, nausea and vomiting, weight or appetite loss due to AIDS or anorexia, Alzheimer’s, anxiety disorders, asthma, autism, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, and aides in alleviating the symptoms of various other ailments or diseases in the human body and as seen in the news as of late, cancer treatment. Cannabis can be administered in several different ways. It can be administered through inhalation (smoking or vaporizing), orally as in a tincture, placed in food and eaten, capsules or oils, administered in topical creams or salves or sublingually by sprays, strips or medicated lozenges or tinctures. The Food and Drug Administration has not approved cannabis to be labeled as a true medication as it has not undergone arduous clinical testing and drug testing like other new drugs on the market have to go through. I have found many pro’s and con’s to the legalization of medical cannabis. The pro’s that I can name for legalizing medical cannabis is that many people with chronic pain or debilitating illnesses, physicians, lawmakers and other medical institutes state that subjective evidence and numerous technical peer assessed studies have found that cannabis does have an accepted medical use for treatment in the United States.
