In Michael Friscolahti’s article, “Shunned in life, remembered in death: Can B.C. teen’s tragic story help foster needed change?”, he discusses the story of fifteen year old Amanda Todd, who committed suicide October 10, 2012, due to excessive bullying. In Friscolahti’s article, he states, “Repeatedly, Todd told her own mother that she wanted to die.” This was the effect bullying has on Todd, eventually becoming tragic. This is only the beginning. Statistics today show a drastic rise in the suicide rate among teens. A quote from www.bullyingstatistics.org/ says, “Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC...” Bullying has bought pain to so many families and there is nothing positive to say about it. The attention is definitely warranted and bullying must stop.…

We are taught to follow The Golden Rule (to treat others the way we want to be treated.) Bullies completely ignore that rule and do what they want, but when normal students simply are late for class, they could have detention! Yes, bullies are punished, but in my opinion, they are not punished well enough. Bullies can be so aggressive that teachers are too scared to stand up for the victim or too even punish the bully! If you agree that teachers, principals, parents, cops, and more, need to stand up and give harsher punishments to bullies this is the paper for you! If you think that the punishments that we are giving now are fine, keep reading because I might just change your mind.…

Such is the case of Phoebe Prince, a young fifteen year old teen who committed suicide in January of this year. According to an article in the New York Times, she had transferred to an American school from Ireland and was eager to make friends. She attracted the attention of a football star at the high school, who apparently had recently broken off a relationship with another girl. It was this girl who persuaded her friends to join in belittling Phoebe any chance they could. The taunts grew more and more violent and abusive, until they turned in to physical threats. After three months of being bullied every day, Phoebe decided to give her accusers exactly what they wanted. She escaped the only way she knew how; by hanging herself in the apartment stairwell when she came home from school.…

In the article by John Cloud, “The Myths of Bullying,” he expresses the exaggeration of the supposed growing “epidemic” of bullying that is spreading across schools. He then begins by presenting two stories that relate to bullies and victims of bullying in their own right. One of which is about a shooting at Chardon High School, Ohio, where 5 students were shot and 3 killed. The other is about a suicide at Rutgers University where the victim was supposedly tormented by his roommate causing him to jump off the G.W. Bridge. Following these events and a couple more, measures have been rushed into place in response to these tragedies--furthering the idea of a growing bullying epidemic. Though, this is most likely an exaggeration as the U.S Department of Justice reported about 37% of students reporting that they do not feel safe at school. However, these figures have remained stable the way they are over the years, supporting the fact that the bullying epidemic is just an exaggeration.…

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt… “ That statement couldn’t be further from the truth. How often have someone implied that words are meaningless and couldn’t possibly be hurt by them? “You’re stupid; you’re ugly; nobody likes you” are words most bullied victims may hear on a regular basis, words that can permeate through ones psyche emotionally, ones that can... well hurt. When we hear of someone being bullied, a normal humane reaction is to gravitate towards the victim and there is nothing wrong with that. Bullying is immoral, its indecorous, simply put – bullying is just mean. However, no one ever takes into consideration that bullies too might be victims, perhaps a victim of circumstance, of life or abuse. This is not to suggest that bullying is a suitable approach to coping with life’s challenges; unfortunately for some, it can be a defense mechanism.…

Jessica Bennett disagrees on taking action to stop bullying and directly associates self-hate as the main reason of suicides in children and teens. In Bennett’s article, “Teenage Bullying Should Not Be Treated as a Crime,” she argues “Its one thing to hold bullies responsible for their own actions, but it 's trickier to blame them for the chain of events that may follow .” In John Cloud’s article, “Bullied to Death,” he takes a look at four cases that resulted in suicides in only four weeks. Cloud states that bullying is more prominent in schools. The four cases of suicide that occurred resulted in questioning what could have been done to “protect” those four victims (Cloud). The answered to that question gives bullying the attention it requires. President Obama responded by designating an increase in funds of 12% to bullying programs throughout schools (Cloud). For example, if a zero tolerance policy, combined with educational hands-on workshops for students become part of the school’s culture, at least children now “know” what happens . Cloud calls attention to victims; these are the ones that would have benefited from “stronger bullying policies” and “stronger legislation” (“Bullied to Death?”). Bennett’s correctness in stating bullies can’t be held responsible for the “chain of actions that follow” because now the community as a whole might intervene before a child takes their life (“Teenage Bullying Should Not Be Treated as a…

I am sure that we can all, regretfully, think of an incident where you or someone you know have been bullied. Whether it was being called a derogatory name, being singled out because of your race, or even somebody saying something inappropriate about you on facebook. All of these examples are far too familiar in today’s society. So familiar, in fact, that statistics show that one out of every four teens face problems with bullying on a daily basis, whether it is mentally, verbally or physically (Fox,3). Bullying has not only ruined the lives of victims, but also ruined the lives of the bullies themselves. Many people do not understand the negative effects bullying has on oneself and/or their family until they are actually involved in a bullying situation. Bullying is a fact of modern society, however, knowing the psychological and even physical effects that bullying can cause, preventative measures should be taken by parents, teachers and school administrators to abolish bullying for good.…
