Shorter School Day Research Paper
Shortening the school day? Who wants to be in school any longer than needed? Is school stressing you out, keep reading to find good reasons to get out earlier. I´m going to tell you 10 reasons why long school days are bad. Shortening the school day is best for everyone. Yes being in school is good, you get to learn, eat, and see friends, but are we going to school for too long? ¨Jennifer Davis says districts largely prefer the extended day rather than the more expensive extended-year approach¨(Davis). Lengthening the day and the year are going to cost the same because no matter what the school is going to have to pay the teachers more. If they shorten the day and the year it will cost less.
Shortening the school day will benefit everyone all around. “Providing additional time can be an effective tool for improving students’ outcomes, but how that time is used is most important,” Jim Hull said (Hull). Students can learn the same stuff we learn in a shorter amount of time. ¨Lengthening the school year, while maintaining the same curricula and teaching methods, isn’t the answer,¨

¨In our modern world of education, the average student ranging from all grades and ages go through a school day of seven to seven and a half hours. Although these hours are thought to be such a short period of time, they are the motive for high stress within teens, as well as the loss of valuable sleep and the deterioration of education¨(amsmith355). Long school days are stressful and boring. “If stress is too high or too low your kid’s performance will suffer,” says Dr. Bernstein (Bernstien). High stress is going to affect students performance.“Parents can have a tremendous impact on how a child handles the stresses of school, but it is the child who is sitting in the classroom and taking the test” (Bernstien). Parents have a huge impact on student stress and if students have stress they are more likely to do worse on tests and other school

This can lead to negative health consequences as well as feelings of negativity directed at school. Students, especially feel the stress when there is something meaningful tied to them which can lead to poor test scores. Approaching tests can lead students to become easily agitated on everything they learned. Even if the students studied for more than an hour, the stress can cause the students to break down under pressure and not do as well as they had the potential to do. Many teachers quit the profession every day because of how much stress is put on them to prepare students to perform on standardized…

Should Portsmouth students go to school for four of five days a week? Portsmouth is a small school district in central Rhode Island. This town's council is not giving the schools enough money, so that is why there are so many budget cuts. Many of the decisions of the school system are pressured upon the school committee. This school's committee, like every school committee, has been elected to office by the parents and the town's people. Portsmouth should have a four day school week because the four day week saves money, provides extra opportunities for both parents and students, and gives students more time to get better grades.…

Changing the five day school week has been argued for and against due the controversy as to whether or not it would actually be beneficial to students and teachers. When approaching the idea, many people would like to believe that five day school weeks are the most efficient and productive way to educate our youth. What is often overlooked, however, is that it is causing students to dread school more than they already do, and lessen their willingness to be in or attentive at school. Not only this, but many teachers easily get behind on either grading or lesson planning, while the school could actually save money when switching to this schedule. By refreshing the way the school schedule has previously been, we can address the issue of exhausted students who don 't truly learn anything, teachers who are overwhelmed with work and the economic questions within America 's schools. Providing both students and teachers with a more equal week of break and school time by having Wednesdays off will make students more willing to attend school, give the teachers time to furnish their lesson plans and give the school a break in costs.…

One reason we should not start school later is because of the lack of time students are left with after school. Coming home to a mountain of homework is a lot of pressure, especially when you must start it late in the afternoon. Justin O’neill from Scholastic Scope article, “Should schools start later?” agrees with this. He says, “Starting school later means dismissing school later. This can interfere with bus schedules, after school activities, and family time” (20). This demonstrates that the amount of time lost in the morning adds up, and it interferes with your personal life. But that is not…

Without a doubt, having an extended year-round school solves the problems of traditional schooling. The majority of people say that they would love to have shorter school days, but not everyone agrees. Parents, kids, teachers, and random people on the street all have opinions. Education Not a Luxury

Trachtenberg shows in his article “Education is Not a Luxury,” that Americans are still using an education system that posses the strategies from an ancient world. He also states that education is no longer a luxury, and makes emphasis in the idea that by lengthening the school year to 11 months and longer days, the education system would be better than how it is now; moreover, students would be more prepared for their future productive life. I agree with Trachtenberg’s idea of making a better use of the whole school year but I don’t think that making them longer is the right answer. Instead, a better use of the school hours is what I think is more important to the students, to teach them all the theory, but most importantly to practice what they learn in the classroom.…

I believe that schooldays should be shorter. I believe that School days should definitely be shorter and everyone agrees because kids are coming home tired and fall asleep waking up the next day with nothing done until the weekend and a whole cycle start again. School days are 6.5-7 hours long and because of this stay/work at home parents don't get much time to see there kids and because of this kids get disconnected from their families and don't talk much to them. During school when kids act up and get suspended they lose so much time about 13-14 HOURS GONE!!!! I get that the reason school days are long is because they want to cram things into that schedule but really they aren't cramming anything in most of class time is spent in working…

Students success can be guaranteed by modifying the length of school periods, hence making school hours longer. This will allow students to actually learn the material expected, and it will also allow students to have a better comprehension of the material. This will improve student overall grades, and guarantee the admission to a good university. Many students would agree that this would improve students understanding of material, however, many would not approve of this change because of the pressure that would be placed upon them would be greater than the pressure they already placed. In a certain school program called KIPP, students have longer school days and shorter vacations. The class hours are ninety minutes of english, ninety minutes of math, an hour of science, an hour of social science, and about two hours of music, every day of the week from seven twenty-five until five p.m. And after school ends there are homework clubs, detention, and sport teams.…

The school board plans to add one and a half hours to school each day. Do you agree or disagree with extending the school day? Currently we have school for 6 hours. School starts at 7:30 and ends at 2:45. So when adding an extra 30 minutes that means that students won’t get out of school until 3:05. So students on first run won’t be home until probably 3:20 and 2nd run won’t be home until 3:40 around. Do i think that schools should add an extra 30 minutes? No, because well get home later we have to sit in the classroom for another 30 minutes.…

If school started later and ended earlier then people would be more aware of what is going on during the day and be more active. When kids have to wake up at 6:30-7:00 in the morning we don't like to get into much and participate in the activities the teachers want us to do. But we can't, we're not up to the challenge since we were up late doing homework. Because a lot of people like myself have either a job to go to or somekind of extra curricular activity to do. This is why kids think school should start later then it does and end earlier, because after school we have to go straight to work or activities that don't end till late at night.…

Secondly, having longer days means more time per class period. Lots of kids aren't passing because they need more instruction time. Giving more time per class period gives the teachers time to explain tough material to students who are behind. The students will better understand the material being taught. Some lessons can last for more than a day, like reading a novel. The students will better understand what they are reading if they do it all in one day than if they have to pick up where they left off the day before. Longer school days and less days in school will lead to a better education for students, there may even be less homework because the students use the extra time given in class to complete it. Plus, the school day also will last until almost dinner time, so the students will go home right after school. They won't be out on the streets getting in trouble in the time period between school ending and dinner.…
