Short Story: Viewer's Discretion
We were the kind of family that wasn't for or against hunting. It was just something we did, like going to church on Easter and eating watermelon in the summer. String didn't like to go, but Pop made him so they could have their together time.
I was lucky being a girl, so Pop left me alone to stay home with Mom and Terri. We never did anything special when they were away except maybe stay up late and watch Johnny Carson. Mom got nervous when Pop was gone, so she'll make popcorn and watch TV with us until her tonic of rum and Coke seeped into her veins. As soon as that happened, Terri would change the station to anything with a 'Viewer's Discretion.'
We were watching a man stalk a woman in a dark park when the phone rang.
"Answer it," Terri

On the 14th of April I saw Dead man’s cell phone at the Gordon Wilson theatre. The play whose playwright is Sarah Ruhl was directed by Dr. David Young. The protagonists of the play are Gordon played by Tyler Brown, Jean played by Kaitlyn Fouts, Mrs. Gottlieb played by Becca Trimbur, Dwight played by Keifer Adkins and Hermia played by Emily Wooten. Jean’s main goal is to comfort Gordon’s mourning of which she overcomes through lies about messages she heard from Gordon. Mrs. Gottlieb’s main focus is the life of Gordon, whose concern is also centered toward his mother’s love. Hermia’s is deeply concerned with the affairs of her late husband Gordon, whereas Dwight’s goal is the bond with Jean. The actors were audible during…

Hunting started on the island because they boys wanted meat. However, it soon became a sick game to the boys. Golding writes, “The boys drew back, and Jack stood up, holding out his hands. ‘Look.’ He giggled and flicked them while the boys laughed at his reeking palms. Then Jack grabbed Maurice and rubbed the stuff over his cheeks. Roger began to withdraw his spear and the boys noticed it for the first time. Robert stabilized the thing in a phrase which was received uproariously. ‘Right up her ass!’”(Golding, 135). At this point of the story, hunting is no longer a fun hobby for the benefit of food rather than demonic entertainment for the benefit of a power trip. The boys at this point are drunk on…

I was very excited to go on this hunt, as it was my first bow hunt. My dad and I arrive at my grandpa’s and drive past his house down a gravel road to an open grass pasture that my brother and I have an old swing attached to a tree. We unloaded our hunting clothes from the truck and got everything we wanted sorted…

Family doesn’t always have to be by blood, sometimes it’s the people that care about you most. When I was a little girl, going to deer camp was just an activity to me, it was fun but didn’t really mean much; however, as I’m getting older, I’m beginning to appreciate that little place a lot more. I have been going up there since I was just a baby girl, making countless friends and memories that will last a lifetime. When I was about eight years old I met a boy named, Andrew, who we called, Buckshot because the first deer he ever killed was a pretty large buck. Buckshot was one of the kids I met there that I still have contact with every now and then. He was always riding fourwheelers with me, playing tag, and basically just keeping me entertained and happy. Out of all of the adults I met…

Ever since I can remember my dad has always taken me hunting. The beginning of hunting season is like a holiday at my house. I hadn’t gotten anything until this deer season but I love being out hunting for so many other reasons as well. I love the fresh air and watching nature. Such as the little birds and squirrels starting their day. And I believe everyone should get to experience that. Enjoying nature is only one of the many things that hunting provides. There are many things provided by hunting. Such as controlling animal populations, maintaining cultural history, providing a source of food, and providing a way to experience nature.…

We all would try to stick together the whole day. My parents had told us the day before that they will not be able to walk with us. So basically, they were leaving us to fend for ourselves. I know, not a very good idea, but I just went along with it. I’ll be able to watch my siblings on my own,…

In the short story "A&P" author John Updike describes in detail what a boy's infatuation with the opposite sex can lead him to do. John Updike goes into great description about the setting. He also makes it a point to be very vivid when he uses characterization. He gives the characters names that subtlety describe their personalities and lets the reader make assumptions and accusations on Sammy's motivations for his quitting his job at the grocery store.…

Everybody makes hard decisions through life that mature them. In John Updike’s short story “A&P” Sammy, a nineteen-year-old clerk working the checkout line at the A&P grocery store, decides to quit his job because he stands out for his decision and fallows it thought. The story focuses on the observation, through Sammy’s point of view, of three girls that come to the store wearing bathing suits, and the reaction of the people for the commotion the girls cause. These bathing suits reveal not only the girls’ flesh, but also Sammy’s personal character. Sammy is a good observer but careless at his job; however, at the end of the story he faces the first step of maturity.…

There is a certain defiance that was instilled in me at a young age. I refuse to bend and crack under the stereotypes that have been thrown around about girls hunting. All my life I have heard it said that girls can’t hunt or shoot as well as men. I’ve been hunting with my dad literally since I was a baby. We are a family of locavores, what this means is that we live off the land. We grow our own vegetables and we hunt and fish for our own meat. So when hunting season comes it is all hands on deck to get the amount of meat we need, which is usually at least ten deer a year. Our favorite time to get out is during the deer rut because this is when the deer are moving around and are obliviously looking for mates. Usually the rut falls around…

    Importance of Hunting

Like baseball and apple pie, hunting is an American tradition shared by young and old, rich and poor, regardless of social or economic status. Three out of every ten people are against hunting but for what reasons? What makes them stand out from the seven out of ten that are for hunting? My preference supports hunting for many reasons. Hunting is important because without it there would be animals struggling to survive because of the shortage of the nutrient food they need on a daily basis to stay healthy. It would also cut down the number of damage done to vehicles by animals. It also gets more kids outdoors and involved in agriculture activities which is needed now days. Believe it or not hunting is also a big part of our economy bringing in hundreds of billions of dollars each year.…

The subject I intend to reflect upon is confidentiality within a professional healthcare setting. Confidentiality formed a part of our professional issues lectures and it piqued my interest due to how differently it is interpreted within healthcare as opposed to education, which is my background. In an educational setting I was taught repeatedly that I could never ensure confidentiality between myself and a child. Comparing that to what I have now learnt in healthcare, this seemed to me almost the opposite way of working as I was used to and so I wish to reflect upon this.…
