“The Outcasts of Poker Flat” is an unfortunate tale involving the death of several exiled outcasts by many different means. The actions of two of the people in the group ultimately led to the death of two young girls, known as Piney and “The Duchess,” by starvation. “Mother Shipton” another female in the group, also died by starvation after giving her food to the younger girls so that they may survive. Starvation was the cause of three of the four deaths in the story, as the fourth death was the result of Mr. Oakhurst’s cowardice, which caused him to shoot himself. However, the three deaths by starvation could have been prevented with a piece of technology. The piece of technology that could have saved the three girls from dying is known as Cup O Noodles. He found himself meeting a merchant named Lorena who had a glass eye. She sold him some noodles that came all the way from the distant country of Japan on the other side of the Pacific Ocean. Bob soon found himself in love with the noodles, but wanted to find a way to make them quicker. He achieved this by drying out the noodles and storing them in cans for later.
