Short Story: Rachel's 'Pathetic'
"Nate!"

Rachel attempts to free herself from the guard's grasp. However the more she pulls the tighter his grip gets.

"Let me go!" she says angrily, slapping at the guard's hand on her arm.

"Aww, so angelic. Wanting to save your lil' brother. The guard says mockingly. "Pathetic."

"Why did you even take him? He's only fourteen!" Rachel asks. She's still struggling against the guard.

"We must make sure the cure works for everyone."

The guard is at least five times stronger than Rachel. And without her powers she's defenseless. But she has to get to Nathaniel.

Suddenly she feels a surge in the middle of her spinal column. It spreads throughout her body, lacing its way through to her legs and arms until

:: Okay...wanna be my human shield?::

Rachel shoots her brother a look. Then the fight of Rachel's life breaks out.

A ray of blue light shoots out of the first guard's gun and just inches away from Rachel's left ear. It hits the wall behind her, burning away the bricks until a human size hole forms.

Rachel uses telekinesis to drop a light fixture on the guards. They scatter, but not before shards of glass go into their flesh.

"We need backup, sector five!" the second guard cries into his communicator.

More guards begin to flood in. Now they are definitely out numbered. Two to at least a dozen.

A muffled moan behind her makes her turn around. Nathaniel is in a fist fight with a guard. Black and purple blooms around Nathaniel's eye, but that's nothing to the guard, whose face is covered in blood from his nose down.

When her defense was down, one sneaks up behind and jabs the heel of his gun into her lower back. She falls, but scrambles up and kicks the guard into the stomach. He is knocked down from the blow.

"Use your powers!" Rachel calls to her brother while she knocks two of the guard's heads together with her

What are you doing?"

Scott quickly puts Rachel on her feet.

A guard, his body bulky of armor, is behind them in the hall.

Scott quickly pushes the rest of his family behind himself. "Run." he tells them. "Get to the Blackbird. Go!"

Someone grabs Rachel from behind. When she senses the guard, she feels like a complete idiot for having her defenses down.

The guards starts down the hall with Rachel in plastic cuffs in front of him.

She heard multiple footsteps behind her and knew the other's were also being taken. It was not even until then that she realized she had a collar on, thus she did not have powers. Little did the guards know that she had a key in her pants pocket.

The small group of guards and mutants walk up a flight of stairs until they get into a common room. It is a large room with doors leading away from it. Armed guards stand at every exit and a few mutants scatter the room.

Rachel is thrown onto the floor by her guard.

After the group of guards leaves the room, Scott kneels next to Rachel. "That's a pretty bad wound." he says.

"I noticed." Rachel says.

"How did it
