Short Story Of The Ransom Of Red Chief
“I tell you, Sam, a human can only stand so much. I takes him by the neck of his clothes and drags him down the mountain. On the way he kicks my legs black-and-blue from the knees down; and I've got two or three bites on my thumb and hand cauterized.” Here, Bill has reached his breaking point and he had believed he had gotten rid of the kid, even risking the ransom money. Bill and Sam are two men that travel around America doing schemes to earn money. Then they got an idea, which they thought was brilliant at the time, to kidnap a small town boy that was 10 years old. Suddenly, when the boy fills himself with excitement he starts pulling pranks and games on Bill and Sam, Bill then realizes that kidnapping the little terror was a mistake. In …show more content…
To start off with, Bill and Sam show how greedy they are when they make the idea of kidnapping Johnny to make money for their joint capital. For instance, in the story it states, “Bill and me had a joint capital of about six hundred dollars, and we needed just two thousand dollars more to pull off a fraudulent town-lot scheme in Western Illinois with. We talked it over on the front steps of the hotel… a kidnapping project ought to do better there than in the radius of newspapers that send reporters out in plain clothes to stir up talk about such things.” This shows how Bill and Sam decide to make decisions according to their selfishness which later on leads to failure. Another event that shows greediness by Sam and Bill was when they took the boy and were only going to give him back to his family if they got the money that in no way belonged to they. According to the text is says, “If you attempt any treachery or fail to comply with our demand as stated, you will never see your boy again. If you pay the money as demanded, he will be returned to you safe and well within three hours. These terms are final, and if you do not accede to them no further communication will be attempted.” This states that they only way the boy will ever be seen again is if they get their money and the father does exactly what they say, …show more content…
To begin with, they decide the steal Johnny for the ransom money which they both knew would either lead to them getting their money or them not getting the money and possibly getting caught, ending up in jail. For instance, in the text it states, “That boy put up a fight like a welter-weight cinnamon bear; but, at last, we got him down in the bottom of the buggy and drove away.” This states how they kidnapped the boy and how they didn’t really think it out. Johnny almost didn’t get in the truck and if he didn’t what would they have done then? That is an example of a horrible planned out idea, that soon led to failure. Second of all, Bill and Sam made an unplanned idea when they took the kid into the cave. This turned bad because the kid they got hold of a hot baked potato and some other threatening tools to use against the men. According to the text it says, “ He put a red-hot boiled potato down my back,' explained Bill, ‘and then mashed it with his foot.” This explained how the men were so unprepared with their horrible decision that the boy actually made their lives heck when they kidnapped him. Just like the story, “Home Alone,” they two grown men made a bad decision to steal from this family's house, which soon led to them failing by the boy, Kevin McCallister, and how he out planned them. Another example of Bill and Sam being prepared is them simple not

As this story unravels, the reader is able to observe the changing of a relationship, tradition, and young man. While reading, each character appears equally content, yet neither is truly pleased. The root of the unhappiness in each character is due to the change that has occurred in Joe and in their tradition. While his father accepts his change of mind, he is quite obviously offended and most likely feels hurt by Joe’s decision. On the other hand, Joe expresses sorrowfulness. This leaves the reader’s mind focused on the past, when the relationship was ideal and each character was happy; reminiscing in the…
