Short Story Of The Appalachian Mountain Bear
Long ago, in the Appalachian Mountain region, there was Bear. He was the greatest and mightiest of all bears. One morning he woke up to go get some food from the nearby stream when this big thunderstorm made him get lost. Bear ended up far from his home and there were animals he’s never seen before. They were bigger, meaner, and stronger. A rhino came up to him and asked why was he there. Bear told him what happened and the rhino said “Follow me my friend, I will take you back to the mountains.” So Bear started to follow him. He asked the rhino what’s his name and the rhino said, ”Just call me Rhino.” They walked for awhile and the air got thinner and the atmosphere around them got darker. “This doesn’t look like the way back

The Chosen Wolf, Adonis, stood overlooking the city as the brisk wind struck him in the face. The snow was so freezing that it felt like there were needles puncturing him with every step. He could see his breath in the chilly air around him. This was very outlandish to him, as he had come from a different world. He was from the planet of Takondwa. On this planet, the sun’s rays felt like hot coals scorching his fur coat. As the wolf was thinking about this, he realized he was getting too caught up with thinking about his home planet.…

Black bears are the only specie of bear that live in New England. (Whittle) Normally humans and black bears are able to coexist peacefully, however, the population of black bears in New England is growing–and it’s causing problems for the locals. In fact, there are currently around 36,000 bears in Maine, 6,000 more than there were five years ago. (Whittle) While some states are calling for hunters to increase the number of bears they kill during hunting season, some people are saying this method of population control is inhumane. Instead, they suggest trap and release methods be used in order to relocate bears to areas away from humans. There are different types of traps used to capture bears, however, most of them are dangerous and possibly…

Dennis Covington writes about the snake handling rituals that go on in Scottsboro, Alabama, in March on 1992. While going to the services held at the churches, Covington realizes that he is not only doing a story on other people's religions, but that he is also discovering his own religion. Covington creates feelings of sympathy and disgust for me while he talks about snake handling in southern churches. Through Covington's eyes I was exposed to his spiritual journey, family, and southern beliefs about snake handling. Covington's spiritual journey throughout Salvation on Sand Mountain was shocking. It makes one think that the phrase "everything happens for a reason" really is true. His first experience in a serpent-handling church was "exhilarating and unsettling" (11). Especially compared to Covington's small Methodist church in Birmingham, Al. The snake-handling church on Sand Mountain seemed to bring a different point of view to Covington about his spiritual life. For example, Covington stated that "he wanted to experience more" (11) because the services at The Church of Jesus with Signs Following always seemed to leave Covington wondering about what was going to happen next.…
