Short Story Ending The Story
12. If you were the author, would you have ended the story in a different way? Why? How so?

Yes, I would have ended it differently. I would have killed off Tom, Daisy, and Jordan. To me stories that end with people who have wronged others and get away with it are terrible stories. I would have had Tom and Daisy have a car accident that would of kill them. Another way I would have ended the story would be, Jordan's golf career goes down hill and when that happens she can't except it, then she loses her mind and kills herself.

I believe the the original ending to the short story “Button, Button” creates the best impact on the audience. The ending of this version teaches a lesson about how selfishness and greed can lead to terrible events happening. In the Twilight Zone adaptation of the story, when Norma pushes the button, she receives the money and is told someone she doesn’t know will be given the reprogrammed box. After the suspense was built, the ending was completely uneventful and exactly the offer that was promised with no abnormality or hidden consequence like in the other forms of the story. The movie “The Box,” was least like the original story because it was a test. The ending of killing and sacrificing made the story less relatable because of its complexity…

SMARTHINKING's E-structor Response Form (Your marked-up essay is below this form.) HOW THIS WORKS: Your e-structor has written overview comments about your essay in the form below. Your e-structor has also embedded comments [in bold and in brackets] throughout your essay. Thank you for choosing SMARTHINKING's OWL; best wishes with revising your paper! Hi, Gregory! I am Kobe F., and I am happy to read and comment on your work today. I like your choice of Jimmy Cross for your discussion because he suffers the most important conflict between desire and duty in O’Brien’s story. Below I suggest some improvements to your thesis statement, conclusion, and comma use to help you enhance your paper. The ERF and embedded comments include the draft being on topic and grammatically correct as in “Help Requested.” So here we go!  *Strengths of the essay: The strongest point of this draft is that you start the introduction with “What is more important desires or obligations?” as your most important topic-related question that hooks readers to read on. Well done, Gregory! *Gregory 6001059 has requested that you respond to the Main Idea/Thesis: “Jimmy Cross the protagonist in O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried” is pulled astray from his obligations as a leader and protector by his desires for love” identifies your topic and the story as well as its author, but your thesis statement must do more, Gregory. Remember, naming the main topic, defining the purpose of the essay, and indicating the main discussion points to follow are the important tasks of the essay’s thesis that is best given at the end of your introductory paragraph after the essential background details. Look at this model: The central theme of the novel East of Eden by John Steinbeck is that love and hate are closely related (topic), so the qualities of each emotion [core idea 1(love) and 2 (hate)] and the relationship between the two (core idea 3) will be discussed to prove that they are reversible aspects of the…

Sam, Dean, Mary, and Castiel all slowly entered the abandoned restaurant with weapons at the ready. When they saw that no one was around, Sam spoke the question on all of their minds. "Are you sure this is the place, Dean?" Dean finally lowered his gun and sighed. He pulled out his phone and checked the text again. "It says to meet at this exact place." They were all looking around in the same area until Cas froze. "What is it, Cas?", Mary asked. "Someone's here." Then, a voice echoed through the building, and they couldn't tell where it was coming from. "I have a name, you know. You might've heard it before." Suddenly, there was a bright, white light that filled the room. All of them shielded their eyes until it was gone. But it wasn't the only thing that disappeared, Cas was nowhere to be seen. They all raised their guns again, looking for anything else that moved. Dean was angry, "Who are you? Come out here!" There was a silent pause and a small voice spoke. "Okay." Now they figured out which direction to look and had their guns at the ready. The owner of the voice stepped out from behind a wall. Their boots quietly clicked against the wooden floor with each step. They stopped, and Sam and Dean both held their breath. They slowly lowered their guns and tried to comprehend what was going on. Mary was clueless, as she had never seen this person before, but they had seemed familiar. She was about to ask what was going on, but Dean was first to speak. His voice was small and broken. "Riley?" Mary had gotten her answer. Her daughter who died years ago was standing in front of them. She then, too, lowered her gun in…

Bright lights. Clean walls. Clean floors. Pale uniforms. People rushing back and forth through the corridors. That nauseating smell that lingers in your nostrils for hours after you leave. Blood slipped down the left side of his face, dripping off his chin, slowly forming a tiny puddle between his legs. His hair was a mess, his clothes soaked - ragged in places where the medics had cut them to check him for injuries. He had been cleared, nothing but a few cuts and bruises. He staggered backwards, leaning up against the wall. One sharp breath. Another. Everything faded away, and simultaneously got unbearably brighter; he tried to detach himself from his surroundings. He wasn’t used to this, even with everything he’d been through in his life, he’d never felt this before. Sliding to the floor, he cradled his head in his palms, barely noticing the shudders that swept through his body, he could still smell burnt rubber and asphalt on his clothes. Pieces of shattered glass fell out of his hair. A voice was talking to him, he struggled to take in what the doctor was saying, but it seemed he had lost control of his mind, he was shutting down. Frantically, he searched for a way out, anything that would change what had happened, save him from having to accept what he was faced with. Without even acknowledging the nurse, he accepted the glass of water she held out to him. Gulp. He started to well up; told himself that he had to be strong, she wouldn’t want this, painfully he laughed out a sob as he thought about how she teased him about never crying. A lone tear escaped, wiping away some of the dirt on his face as it made its way down his cheek. “Shit.” “Sorry.” He was instinctively apologetic, even though he knew she wasn’t there; she hated when he swore. Gulp.…

It was a beautiful fall weekend; the sunlight shined enough to provide just the right amount of warmth to make it the perfect picnic day. I was on my way to meet my parents for the annual South Florida Police and Fire bar-b-que. I knew that there was a chance that he would be there since a good part of his family is fire fighters. I have been organizing, planning, helping, running, and attending this event ever since I can remember, and there had only been a few times that he showed up because the picnic fell on his mother’s weekend. As the time passed I thought I was in the clear, and that he was a no show. Little did I know, I was wrong. I saw him for the first time since that day. I noticed everything, his brown hair, green eyes, and tight shirt showing every muscle. The emotions I had were like a soup of feelings with the ingredients of anger, awkwardness, sadness, disappointment, and happiness. The one thing I knew for sure was that he was walking right in my direction and his eyes were on me. I quickly turned around. What do I say? How do I act? Should I be stand-offish or should I be my normal sweet self? All of these questions flooded my mind and I started to panic. It was too late I heard that familiar breathtaking voice, “Hey Beautiful.” I realized that I couldn’t have my back turned toward him forever, I had to face my fears and emotions, finally settle this. I turned back around and saw that contagious smile. I didn’t know what else to do but to wrap my arms around him. As we stood there, I heard a whisper in my ear, “I’m sorry for what I have done. I realized my mistakes and I’m getting them fixed. I never meant to hurt you my baby girl. I hope that you can forgive me. I love you Tay. But promise me something, be a part of my life forever.” I felt a tear slide down my face, and all I could say is “I do.” My heart was touched, but at the same time it was hurt. I never did want to let go of what we had, or of him. He made me feel safe, I trusted him with…

When I was just a little girl I got lost at a flea market. I was holding hands with my dad – at least I thought it was my dad. But then I looked up and saw the totally unfamiliar face of an apparently very surprised man that has definitely not been my dad. That was the moment when I realized that I had lost my parents. I looked left, right, left again, over to the candy stand and even underneath a bench – of course they weren’t sitting there waiting for me. I breathed heavily. I got misty eyes. And then I panicked. I already imagined myself spending the rest of my childhood in an orphanage, never seeing my beloved family again. They would be looking for me, of course, but when they wouldn’t be successful they finally would forget me. At least, that was what my mind was telling me at that moment.…

Everything was peaceful. The day went as smooth as butter. I walked out of the office from a hard and exhausting day at work. I sold three houses, did six 100-page reports, and sucked up to the boss for that little bit extra in my pay check. I walked into my house I shared with my best friend and housemate Madeline. “Hey Madi, I am so exhausted! The boss had me working non-stop today. Ugh I can't wait for tonight.” You see tonight was my 22nd birthday. I was ready to party in style. I already had a limo and a private bar ready for my friends and me. My friends for life included: my husband and bestie Adam Rouge, second in command Ralphie Bontalone, my all time party gal Stephanie Cortez, and of course my all time would not be able to survive without my Madeline.…
