Short Story: Back To The Pro-Catholic School
Hearing this information brought Isolde to a conclusion. “So this brings us to the present day, correct? Or shall we say the recent discovery of one of the Brotzmans’ coffers?”
“Indeed,” the Bauer emissary replied, “And here is where me and my counterpart’s superiors come in. My company will only pledge financial support to the CSC movement under one condition.” He forwarded his deal with Harold. “If the Catholic schools in this country experience a rebirth, assist the pro-Catholic school faction within the CSU.”
“And by assisting us, we want access to some of your family’s wealth,” the other emissary added. “In exchange, my superiors will arrange for coordinated grassroots activism and rallies. At this time, it’s the best we can do.”
Walther whispered to Harold. “If you accept the offer now, we can pay them off later.”

“Trust me,” advised Walther, “These guys are close allies of Isolde and me. Help one of them and you’ll also help us as a result.”
“Okay,” agreed Harold, “if you say so.” He resumed his dialogue with the two emissaries. “Then in that case,” he told the Underground member, “Tell your superiors that I extend my hand to them.” He then turned to the other one. “And please inform Bauer Industries that my family’s ties are still strong.” Standing upright, he held out his hand to them. “I look forward to working with both

In 1841, Dorothea Dix taught Sunday School at a women’s prison, and noticed the horrible conditions they were living in. She went around to other prisons, observing their living conditions, before making a document and presenting it to the Massachusetts legislature. This made the prison budgets larger, but Dorothea continued going around the states and establishing mental asylums. She even traveled to Europe, and met with Pope Pius IX, and convinced him to construct a new hospital for the mentally ill.…

In her lecture professor Brooten discusses the Pentateuch and the notion of a gender dichotomy present in the early church. In particular, she notes that enslaved men and women were different in the eyes of law. She begins by contrasting the rules for holding Hebrew slaves in the various books of the Pentateuch. She claims that in Exodus 21 men had to be released from slavery after six years of service, whereas this right was not extended to women. This changes in Deuteronomy where both Hebrew men and women had to be released after six years of service, at which point their master often gave them some sheep, wine, or other means to support themselves.…

The presence and extent of religion in public schools is one of the most difficult church/state issues. Religion in schools is a problem that can affect many people because of how they are treated in a discriminatory manner, also not all have the same religion or in some cases people have no religion. In my opinion, schools and religion should not be linked because religion is a personal and voluntary choice.…

22nd of August, despite being a Monday, turned out to be the day that an exclusive episode of the popular Republic Program sponsored podcast, Radio Free Catholic Education, or RFCE, was broadcasted to the public during the morning hours. As commonly expected from everyone who listened to the show for the past few years it had been broadcasting, the voice of former Republic Program Representative (and secretly, a BCA and Coalition member) Beatrice Peterson conducted her usual routine.…

Being gay and Catholic is like enjoying mustard and coffee. While individually both pleasing, when mixed together not as appealing. My faith, an essential part of myself, is ingrained into my DNA and after what seemed like a lifetime of suppression, I also discovered inherent in myself was an attraction to women. Whether I’d like to admit it or not, growing up as a devout Catholic at times made it seem as if this aspect was unacceptable. I remember one day on the playground listening to a friend recall a bible story of God flooding a town filled with “filthy” gays and sinners. In seeking guidance from a counselor my troubles only worsened. While she wasn’t from my church, she appeared to be a woman of faith. She comforted me and genuinely cared for my grievances. However, as she proceeded to remedy my thoughts she explained how a lesbian woman at her church was “fixed” and inferred I ought to try the same method.…

"All the world is a school, and in it one lesson is just now being taught, and that is the utter insecurity of life and property in the presence of an aggrieved class. This lesson can be learned by the ignorant as well as by the wise. Education, the sheet anchor of safety to a society where liberty and justice are secure, is a dangerous thing to a society in the presence of injustice and oppression." – Frederick Douglas…

Growing up in a Christian Science household meant that I did not have checkups with the doctor, immunizations, or take medication. Growing up in a Christian Science household meant no medical care, for almost any reason, for anyone in my family. One of the most distinct memories I have from childhood is of my mother breaking her arm while swatting a fly. Every day for the next two years my mother’s health visibly declined. She grew weaker and thinner until she was unable to walk; she was little more than skin and bones except for her arm, which remained swollen due to the untreated breakage. It wasn’t until several years after she died that I learned that the cause of my mother’s illness was breast cancer which, left untreated, was the inevitable cause of her death. Growing up in a Christian Science household means that I have a unique appreciation for the impact disease can have on an individual and their family.…

I have had to resort to some things that I don't think I will love, but It is for the good of my children. I have decided to go into hiding along with my family. The hiding place is the annex in the building of my business, Otto Frank’s. The annex will be fairly large enough for my family . I am not quite done with everything yet, but I expect to be at the end of the week. Only thing is i'm going to need help setting up the annex, but now I realize that I might need to turn to Mr. Van Daan for help.He is a business associate of mine. It's going to be a tight fit with both him and our families, but I want my children to be secure. “Oh hello Mr. Van Daan. I've been meaning to talk to you.” “Hello Mr.Frank . I hope you have good news. (he says with suspicion)” “Well not quite. Not at all actually. I am going into hiding.” “That's very sudden of you Mr.Frank.” “Yes, but this is necessary information for you to know because I need your help to set up our hiding place.” “Where do you even plan to hide? How will you get food and water? How secure is the area? Its the answers to these questions that can either make us safe or put us in an amount of danger that I am most certainly not prepared for.” “The plan is to hide in the annex at the building.” “The Otto Frank's building? Out back?” “Yes. I also need help loading in the furniture in there which is why i need your help” “I really don't want to take this risk but It certainly seems better then getting sent to a concentration camp” “Exactly my point Mr.Van Daan” “Also, if I help you with this , you must allow me and my family and I to also go into hiding” “Why of course. Only thing is you have to understand. The annex will be quite a tight fit with both you and your family depending on how many people are in your family” “Just me, My wife and my son….along with his cat” “ His cat?. I think i'm just going to ignore that proposition. “Understood” So we continued the plan for awhile. We lived our lives”regularly”…

I have been blessed to attend Calvert Catholic high school since pre-school. It gives me the opportunities to grow up in my faith every day. When you walk in the door, you notice all the care and support that goes into making this school great. My Catholic education has taught me not just to appreciate solving equations algebraically, and conjugate Spanish verbs. It has made me the person I am today, enriched by the life lessons and moral teachings that can be found in Catholic schools today. It gives me the opportunity to learn about Jesus and go to mass once a week, with my class mates. We receive the sacrament of Reconciliation three times a week. Every day, we get the privilege to pray before we start every class. As a Catholic Christian,…

The struggle over religion in American schools relates back to the 1850’s, a struggle that has been through much upheaval and reform and is rooted from religious conflict brought to the United States. From the reading, Catholicism and American Freedom, by John McGreevy, I have learned where many of the problems with Protestants and Catholicism in American schools emerged. The story of Whall, in the introduction portrays the struggle of Protestant resistance that Catholicism has constantly seen during the 1800’s in America. After reading the introductory paragraph I have raised the question, should Whall be discharged for believing in Catholicism? Whether or not it was acceptable in school, Whall decided to follow his own beliefs, thus being…
