In a PowerPoint on Moodle, I showed the rules for Classic American Short Stories established by Hawthorne, Irving, and Poe. Using these as criteria, decide if “Shaving” is a Classic Short Story. Students should address each rule individually using quotes and specific examples from the story to support his or her opinion. The first rule has been done as an example. In a PowerPoint on Moodle, I showed the rules for Classic American Short Stories established by Hawthorne, Irving, and Poe. SMARTHINKING's E-structor Response Form (Your marked-up essay is below this form.) HOW THIS WORKS: Your e-structor has written overview comments about your essay in the form below. Your e-structor has also embedded comments [in bold and in brackets] throughout your essay. Thank you for choosing SMARTHINKING's OWL; best wishes with revising your paper! Hi, Gregory! I am Kobe F., and I am happy to read and comment on your work today. I like your choice of Jimmy Cross for your discussion because he suffers the most important conflict between desire and duty in O’Brien’s story. Below I suggest some improvements to your thesis statement, conclusion, and comma use to help you enhance your paper. The ERF and embedded comments include the draft being on topic and grammatically correct as in “Help Requested.” So here we go!  *Strengths of the essay: The strongest point of this draft is that you start the introduction with “What is more important desires or obligations?” as your most important topic-related question that hooks readers to read on. Well done, Gregory! *Gregory 6001059 has requested that you respond to the Main Idea/Thesis: “Jimmy Cross the protagonist in O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried” is pulled astray from his obligations as a leader and protector by his desires for love” identifies your topic and the story as well as its author, but your thesis statement must do more, Gregory. Remember, naming the main topic, defining the purpose of the essay, and indicating the main discussion points to follow are the important tasks of the essay’s thesis that is best given at the end of your introductory paragraph after the essential background details. Look at this model: The central theme of the novel East of Eden by John Steinbeck is that love and hate are closely related (topic), so the qualities of each emotion [core idea 1(love) and 2 (hate)] and the relationship between the two (core idea 3) will be discussed to prove that they are reversible aspects of the…

Deaf to the thunderous roars and screaming outside, Ikuseghan ran towards Itohan and helped her up. “Com’on, stop bleeding, just stop bleeding.” Ikuseghan was trying to wrap the injury with along piece of cloth but the blood kept gushing out. “It’s ok, I knew something like this would happen. I’m glad I at least died protecting you.” Itohan whispered softly. “No don’t say that. You’re gonna live, then we’re gonna get out of the wretched place.” With tears rolling down his face, Ikuseghan reassured Itohan, “When we get back, Mom and Dad will be happy to see us. Then, we’ll play hide-and-seek in the tall grass like we used to. You’ll be fine. It’s gonna be ok.” Itohan looked at Ikuseghan in the face and said, ”Yeah, you’re right, We’ll have fun like we used to.” Finally, she closed her eyes and her head…

During the past five weeks me and my group, David, Brandon, and Ethan, have learned many things from our book and our group discussions. The book are group decided to do was Runner, by Carl Deuker, a fiction novel based on a child who must make his own money to pay for his fathers bills. All together my group had four meetings and all of them helped us to learn more about the book, ourselves as a group participant, and as peers.…

It is important that students are exposed to many different aspects of writing. Exploring a unit of short stories offers students many opportunities to internalize and apply the knowledge they gain about reading and interpreting literature to the next story they read. They are more frequently exposed to the craft of using language, the literary devices that authors use, and how these can make a story work (or not work) for a reader. The short stories themselves contain underlying themes or motifs that challenge the students to draw broader conclusions from the material, encouraging students to think on a wider level about interconnected issues and themes that run throughout the materials.…

It was a beautiful fall weekend; the sunlight shined enough to provide just the right amount of warmth to make it the perfect picnic day. I was on my way to meet my parents for the annual South Florida Police and Fire bar-b-que. I knew that there was a chance that he would be there since a good part of his family is fire fighters. I have been organizing, planning, helping, running, and attending this event ever since I can remember, and there had only been a few times that he showed up because the picnic fell on his mother’s weekend. As the time passed I thought I was in the clear, and that he was a no show. Little did I know, I was wrong. I saw him for the first time since that day. I noticed everything, his brown hair, green eyes, and tight shirt showing every muscle. The emotions I had were like a soup of feelings with the ingredients of anger, awkwardness, sadness, disappointment, and happiness. The one thing I knew for sure was that he was walking right in my direction and his eyes were on me. I quickly turned around. What do I say? How do I act? Should I be stand-offish or should I be my normal sweet self? All of these questions flooded my mind and I started to panic. It was too late I heard that familiar breathtaking voice, “Hey Beautiful.” I realized that I couldn’t have my back turned toward him forever, I had to face my fears and emotions, finally settle this. I turned back around and saw that contagious smile. I didn’t know what else to do but to wrap my arms around him. As we stood there, I heard a whisper in my ear, “I’m sorry for what I have done. I realized my mistakes and I’m getting them fixed. I never meant to hurt you my baby girl. I hope that you can forgive me. I love you Tay. But promise me something, be a part of my life forever.” I felt a tear slide down my face, and all I could say is “I do.” My heart was touched, but at the same time it was hurt. I never did want to let go of what we had, or of him. He made me feel safe, I trusted him with…
