Dota Games: A mystifying Addiction
Thesis Statement

I. Introduction
Defense of the Ancients (DotA) is a custom scenario for Warcraft III, based on the “Aeon of Strife” map for StarCraft. The objective of the scenario is to destroy the opponents “Ancient”. The two teams’ ancients are heavily guarded structures at opposing corners of the map. Players use powerful units known as heroes, and are assisted by allied heroes and AI-controlled fighters called “creeps”. As in role-playing games, players level up their hero and use gold to buy equipment during the mission.

The scenario was developed with the “World Editor” of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, and was updated upon the release of the Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. There have been many variations of the original concept; currently, the most popular is Dota Allstars, which has been maintained by several authors during development.

Since its release, Allstars has become a feature at several worldwide tournaments, including Blizzard Entertainment’s BlizzCon and Asian World Cyber Games, as well as the Cyberathlete Amateur and CyberEvolution Leagues; Gamasutra was declared that DotA was perhaps the most popular “free, non-supported game mod in the world”. The map has gone on to influence other maps and games, including LOL(league of Legends), HON(Heroes of New Earth), and Demigod.

Computer Games have now been with us for over 30 years. The Atari 2600 is nearly 25 years old. Civilization is now nearly 10 years old. Yet, many people fail to recognized this complex achievements as more than fads or child’s play. Ask most people what they think about video games many will respond that they’re a waste of

Kurt Squire, a writer for “Game Studios”, in his article “Cultural Framing of Computer/Video Games”(2002) explores the role of video game in society that proposes that video games are the next generation of media with a variety of uses. He focuses on the history of games-media and compares the platform to other media such as film and television, in order to counter arguments critical of games, then he explores the beneficial implementation of games for learning purposes by providing evidence supporting games as learning tools. Squire develops this evidence in order to persuade the audience to favor video and computer games as a “next-generation” social tool. Squire seems to intend his audience to be either business or media leaders by presenting…

World of Warcraft is set in a virtual “sandbox world” known as Azeroth. In Azeroth, players choose between two opposing factions: the Alliance, and the Horde. In terms of black and white, the Alliance would be considered the “good side” since they consider “nobility and honor” as some of their standards, while the Horde tends to be more aggressive in their appearance, and their approach to in-game conflict. Throughout the game, players work together to finish various quests around Azeroth, as well as gaining new abilities, and equipment for their avatars.…

The first essay that really caught my attention was, “Art form for the Digital age,” by Henry Jenkins. In his essay, he explains that video games have become a huge part of our modern media today, and that he believes it is time that we take them seriously, by not only acknowledging the faults that people point out in them, such as violence, but also looking into the art aspect of these games. Jenkins begins his essay by telling us that over 215 million computer and video games had been bought by Americans in the year 1999 alone (199). He then proceeds to explain that right now video games are looked down on heavily, and are viewed as worthless. However, Jenkins then fights back with this by stating, “Computer…

Two teams of five players must try to destroy each other’s base. That’s it. Sounds simple right? But when XP, gold, CS, wards, lanes, ganks, Barons, dragons, and countless other variables that no doubt make little or no sense to the uninitiated are thrown into the mix, the game morphs from kindergarten math into math so complicated and complex, that even the world’s best mathematicians would struggle. I was drawn in by the simplistic masquerade, and then found myself enthralled by the intricacies and competitiveness of the game. Every facet I discovered in the game was so interesting and unique that I couldn’t look at games in the same light ever again. If I wasn’t playing League of Legends, I was wishing that I was. There wasn’t a day where I didn’t think of it, I found something I truly loved doing. I was content. And to this very day, I still…

The band Pentakill originates from the fictional world of Runeterra and is the world from which the characters of League of Legends are from. The band originally consisted of 5 members from the game: the lead vocalist, Karthus: The Deathsinger; Mordekaiser: the Iron Revenant on guitar; Yorick: The Shepherd of Souls on bass; Olaf: The Berserker on drums; and Sona: Maven of the Strings as the keyboardist; however, in 2017 Pentakill introduced a new member Kayle: the Judicator as a backup vocalist. The band’s peak popularity is hard to exactly pinpoint due to the band’s unconventional emergence and also from the band not being a physically existing entity in our reality; however, one can look at the popularity of their content through their views, downloads, or plays and determine that the band's peak popularity was in 2014 with the release of the album Smite…

One of these MMORPGs is called World of Warcraft, also known as WoW by both its fans and critics. First released to North America in 2004, WoW currently holds the Guinness World Record for the world 's “most popular subscription-based Massively Multiplayer Online Role Player (sic) Game” with “a total of over 12 million subscribers” (Most). In this game, players choose a character out of thirteen races that are divided into two factions – the Alliance and the Horde. The Human, Dwarf, Gnome, Night Elf, Draenei, and Worgen races make up the Alliance, whereas the Orc, Troll, Undead, Tauren, Blood Elf, and Goblin races are a part of the Horde; Pandaren can choose to be on either side. Players then choose a class such as a Mage, Warlock, Priest, Rogue, Druid, Hunter, Shaman, Warrior, Paladin, Death Knight, or Monk and can then customize their avatar to their liking (World). Once a player has created their character, they are thrown into a medieval setting; avatars adventure through different lands filled with castles, forests, dragons, and other monsters, collecting treasure called “loot” along the way (Nardi). Players start at level 1 and can advance to level 90 in a process called “leveling” by completing quests, or mini-games, that give them gold,…
