Shirley Jackson The Lottery Analysis

I have chosen the story called “The lottery” for my summative task. This finest story of Shirley Jackson was written in the month of its first publication, in the June 26, 1948, issue of The New Yorker. Shirley Jackson was an American author and popular writer in her time. She is best known for her mesmerizing short stories. When she was a student she became involved in literary magazine through which she met her future husband Stanley Hyman. She is best known for the short story called “the lottery”. The title of short story, the lottery symbolises the blindly followed tradition which lasts till generations. This is a fictional story but the context of the story is linked to real life situation. The main reason of Shirley Jackson, writing the story was to spread the awareness of feminism. The author has tried to depict individual’s struggle. The author wanted the readers to reflect upon past beliefs which have demolished the trust in someone. The story is that from a black box (which contains numerous slips) the head of the different family member picks a slip and unfolds it when everyone has got the slips. When a person gets a black spot on the slip then their family members need to pick the slips. Again if the member gets the black spot he/she is stoned to death. In the Story
Children and their parents started gathering around collecting all the stones to a side. There was crowd because it was time for the lottery. Some people were scared and some were excited. Tessie was smiling when she came hurriedly along the path to the square and slide into the place back of the crowd; she forgot what day it was. Tessie’s late arrival at the lottery set herself behind the crowd. Author has tried to give use a signal that through the end she will be apart from all the other people too. After everything was done the member who was stoned to death was none other than Tessie
