Shin Saimdang Research Paper

Shin Saimdang (1504-1551), a female artist, is one of the most famous women in Korean history, noted for her skills in the fields of art, calligraphy, embroidery, and poetry. Not only is she most famous for her exquisite artwork, but her son, Yi I, was one of the greatest Confucian scholars in Korean history. Her art was mainly based around nature, as her paintings often included plants, insects and sometimes animals. During her time, which was during the Yi Dynasty (1392-1910), confucianism was encouraged in society. The encouraged confucianism resulted in paintings of landscapes, plants and animals, which is what Saimdang usually painted. She not only was known for art, however. In her society, women were limited in educational opportunity.
As a result of her famous artwork and her accomplishments, a portrait of her face AND her artwork is portrayed on the 50,000 won bill. Another famous artist would be Lee Jung-Seob.
