Sherry Turkle is correct when saying social media is corroding the real community. Social media is broadening our connections, but making them shallower. Social media gives people a false sense of belonging and connection. As Sherry Turkle pointed out, technology “offers us three gratifying fantasies. One, that we can put our attention wherever we want it to be; two, that we will always be heard; and three, that we will never have to be alone. And that third idea, that we will never have to be alone, is central to changing our psyches. Because the moment that people are alone, even for a few seconds, they become anxious, they panic, they fidget, they reach for a device”. Social media has made it so that it is easy to contact your friends at any time, talk to anyone, anywhere, but it has also made it so that we spend too much time on it. Many people now just sit on their phone or skype and talk to friends virtually, and while you are still communicating with your friends, the experience of going out and doing something is lost. People aren’t getting enough fresh air, and we are seeing more obese people. Kids now just sit on the couch and talk to their friends while playing video games.
