Sherman Alexie The Nightmare Analysis
There is a paragraph in Alexie's story where the 7-11 clerk is described in the most stereotypical fashion. But, it works. The clerk is described as a man with "acne scars and a bad haircut, work pants that showed off his white socks, and those cheap black shoes that have no support." Later, we are introduced to a few fictional characters, produced by a series of the protagonists nightmares. Nightmares that may have been inspired by cruel accounts of third world countries. For example, the protagonist describes a nightmare that seems to stick with him. In the nightmare, "three mounted soldiers played polo with a dead Indian woman's head." The protagonist is an Indian himself, and in some way he seems to be haunted by his ancestors past. In

An example when Alexie’s character, Jackson Jackson used humor in this story was when he was awoken from a drunken comma on the railroad tracks by a police officer. As Jackson wakes up he recognizes Officer Williams, a good white cop with a sweet tooth. “I am taking you over to detox,” Officer Williams said. “No man, that place is awful. It is full of drunken Indians.” They both laughed and drove off. “I do not know how you guys do it” he said. “What guys?” Jackson asked. “You Indians. How the hell you laugh so much? I just picked your ass off the railroad tracks, and you’re making jokes.” he said. Jackson replied, “The two funniest tribes i have ever been around are Indians and Jew, so I guess that says something about the inherent humor of genocide.” In this conversation Jackson uses humor to find laughter in a situation where Indian stereotypes say that all Indians are alcoholics. A further meaning to this is that Jackson uses humor to get past this situation. When compared to his life, multiple divorces, flunking out of college, and being a homeless alcoholic, shows his capability of moving on past events the way he laughed off the comment about drunken…

Alexie’s father plays a part against the stereotype of Indians because he was “one of the few Indians who went to Catholic school on purpose” (Alexie 110). The stereotype was that all Indians were dumb and incapable of learning, but Alexie’s dad stood out of the crowd. Alexei’s father loved reading and loved to learn which put him out of the loop of the stereotype.…

In the Moyers interview of Sherman Alexie numerous things stood out to me, that I have never known about or never looked at in a certain way. The biggest of which is the signing of a paper ordering the death of 38 Indians by Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln is widely known as one of the best presidents in the history of the U.S. and that he never did anything wrong. This impossible however for a human being, but his signature on the paper was contradicting what he was supporting to gain more rights for everyone. This was covered up from most Americans however because of the maybe damaging a hero's identity. The Natives never did not know about this, as Alexie says in the interview that they always knew about executions and were usually afraid of them.…

A theme of Sherman Alexie’s Flight is constant change, instability, and violence. The protagonist, Zits, has been shuffled from foster home to foster home since his mother passed and father abandoned him. The homes and people that Zits has been forced into are all unfamiliar. The only place that gives Zits stability and comfort is, oddly, jail. With that, the only person constantly in his life is Officer Dave, a city police officer who has arrested Zits multiple times. Officer Dave’s is the juxtaposition to the capricious and magical events of Zits’ life.…

Coming from a family with much diversity, I can relate to Alexie’s use of stereotypes. My grandfather came to the United States from Italy, and my grandmother was Jewish, and with them came the stereotypes, much of them true. My grandfather loved pasta, and talked with his hands, and my grandmother was a nice Jewish girl who counted her pennies. Whether by choice or by birthright, these stereotypes never bothered me, instead I was I was proud of them. In "What You Pawn I Will Redeem" Alexie is proud of his heritage and uses humor to represent the negative stereotypes of the Native American Indian.…

In the novel Flight by Sherman Alexie, the narrator Zits says, “Yes, I am Irish and Indian, which would be the coolest blend in the world if my parents were around to teach me how to be Irish and Indian. But they’re not here and haven’t been for years, so I’m not really Irish and Indian. I’m a blank sky, a human solar eclipse” (Alexie 5). In my opinion this quote could mean, since his parents died or left there is no one to help him learn his background or his culture. He is a sky without clouds, a person with no history or a human that is blocked from being who they really are, who he want to be. Irish or Indian. Depending on who you are and what you believe in, you would question if it is important to know your nationality. Me, Personally,…

First of all, Alexie employs wit by mocking stereotypical reservation life, the frequently biased film industry, and even his own people, the Native Americans. From the opening scene as tribal meteorologist and traffic reporter Lester Falls Apart covers his seemingly uneventful daily traffic report, as he has for the last twenty-six years, from the rooftop of his broken down KREZ van, we are introduced to the odd and amusing way of life on the “rez.” In another scene, Victor and Thomas are embarking on their solemn journey and are offered a ride by Thelma and Lucy driving down the road in reverse; again, it is suggested that they exist in a somewhat backwards nation. In addition, Alexie is quick to taunt the movie industry by belittling white cowboy heroes; he even goes so far as to ridicule John Wayne’s teeth. Additionally, during Smoke Signals, the phrase “It’s a good day to die,” from the movie Little Big Man, is expanded upon to include being a “good day to be indigenous, to have breakfast,” and “to play basketball.” Alexie is able to laugh at himself by placing his own people’s stereotypical stoic attitudes, warrior looks, and knowledge of hair use on the firing line. He is able to find absurdity in their television viewing habits; for…

The short story "Class" by Sherman Alexie tells of the struggles of an American Indian man and tries to demonstrate how he reacts to his contrasted feelings and diverse world around him. Flight by Sherman Alexie was an empowering novel about a boy, named Zit, who in my opinion never experienced true love. He learned how to shut down and not feel any type of emotion. He learned that if you don’t love anybody then they wouldn’t be able to hurt you, if you don’t give your trust to people they wouldn’t be able to deceive you. Zit is fifteen and for the past nine years he has from careless family member house to thoughtless foster homes. His mother who was Irish American died when he was only six years old from cancer and Zits father who was Native American, left when he was born. At the beginning of the novel he describes himself as “a blank sky, a human solar eclipse,” he felt he didn’t belong to anyone and nobody belonged to him. He had stayed with his aunt and her abusive boyfriend after his mom passed away but ran away from there and got involved in risky behavior such as drinking heavily, smoking, stealing cars, and often finding himself in a juvenile detention centers.…
