Finally, special thanks to my teacher who guided me every step of the way through this Internal Assessment.

Introduction
The portfolio is focused on the theme Child Abuse. Child Abuse is defined in the Children Young Persons and their Families Act as “the harming (whether physically, emotionally, or sexually), ill-treatment, abuse, neglect or deprivation of any child or young person.”  It includes emotional abuse, verbal abuse, physical abuse and sexual abuse. The researcher developed an interest in the theme Child Abuse based on observations, as the issue is seen in the surroundings almost on a daily basis often in the form of verbal and physical abuse. This sparked an interest to investigate the causes and effects of this phenomenon on society and especially on the abused child. The researcher having aspirations of being a psychologist who deals with the mental and scientific study of behaviours chose this topic has it was deemed relevant to the desired field of work. The portfolio incorporates an original piece in the form of a narrative poem entitled “The Lament of an Abused Child”. It is about an abused teenager, who is constantly taunted by her mother. Communicative behaviours and dialectal variation are two language indicators that are dominant in the piece and the researcher gives details in explaining the indicators in the analysis. the portfolio consists of a preface which gives details on the purpose of writing the poem “The Lament of An Abused Child” Therefore, doing this research will enhance the researcher’s communicative and creative skills. Information was collected using questionnaires. Twenty (20) questionnaires were distributed to the residents of Church Corner. By executing a survey, developing and analyzing a creative piece, the researcher will garner extensive knowledge on the issue. The portfolio serves to inform the audience about the causes of the theme Child Abuse and the effect it has on the abused child. It interests the researcher based on observations and family related issues. The researcher wishes to enlighten the audience that child abuse is a big issue. The portfolio satisfies the criteria of the internal assessment of Communication Studies Course. The portfolio has also informed the researcher and it is expected that the theme and topic selected will be very informative to the readers.

It’s not what you do to me sometimes it is what you don’t do I am yearning for a tender word, a hug or even a shrug
I cry out so loud for some attention, some kind of affection But it seems like I am the only one who hears...
