Shelter Reflection Paper
• The last two days of this past week were quite busy at the Crisis Center. At one point, we had four open beds which allowed for many calls inquiring about shelter. Several callers I had to deny shelter because of previous interactions they had while receiving services from the agency. Others either partially completed or fully completed the intake paperwork but were not approved by approval staff. I was able to accept two people into shelter, but one did not show up in the allotted time. The client that did arrive at the shelter and proceed with check-in was Beth* and her seven month old son. This client had been in an abusive relationship with her husband for several years. The abuse was both physical and emotional. The abuse had become so horrific at points …show more content…
She immediately made friends with another young mother in her bedroom. In addition to this experience, I was also given my first client that I would solely be working with along with a project called Lifetime Surveys. The client I was given was actually Beth*, which made me very happy because I felt that I had already gained part of her trust during the check-in experience. On Thursday, September 29th, I will complete a forty-eight hour interview with Beth*. This is done to see how the client is progressing after being in the shelter for forty-eight hours along with talking about different aspects that were not discussed during the intake and check-in. The Lifetime Surveys are an assignment that I have been given to complete with clients during my time at the agency. The purpose of these surveys is to receive information on how clients after receiving services from the agency. In order to participate, a client must have been in the shelter for at least a total of six days, have a permanent email address or phone number, and be willing to participate in the six month period that the survey runs for. On Thursday, I will begin speaking to clients about the surveys and hopefully

We try to view our client 's for what they have done right considering their strenuous circumstances rather than dwelling on their negative behaviours. Their behaviours must be acknowledged in order to ensure the safety of the children involved, but with a strength-based perspective we go into the client 's lives with the purpose of helping them, not punishing them. In saying this, I think Child Welfare workers hold the same values. Referring to this specific case, I believe the strengths lay where the Ministry gave the parents many options to help them confront their problems in order to get their child back. This case proves that Child Welfare workers are attempting to use differential response when reporting abuse or neglect in a home (Schene, 2001). Differential response means treating each family according to their circumstances, not according to what the standard reporting paradigm says. This type of treatment is reflected in this case when the family and social worker came together through mediation to make a specific plan to help them get their child…

On Wednesday, April 13, I, Madison Blagg, met with fellow classmate Brianna Gipson in order to recreate two client interactions with each other. For our first interview, I was the social worker and she was a client that we interviewed at Trinity Terrace, whom I’ll simply refer to as JF. We interviewed JF at Trinity Terrace twice for our HBSE II assignment, however she refused to be taped, recorded or sign forms other than the permission to interview her form. So in order to compensate we met in Rees Jones, each conducted a 15 minute interview and each took turns being the client and the social worker. From this point on I’ll simply keep to the role-play, that Brianna is JF, we were at Trinity Terrace, and that I was the resident clinical social worker on staff.…

In the very first vignette Esperanza discusses how her family moved around a lot and even though the house on Mango Street was not the house of their dreams, it was a great achievement to own it. Although Esperanza knew they were not moving anytime soon, she recognized one advantage; her family was free of landlord management. In my community home ownership is a constant battle and for many simply a dream. I learn the value of home ownership in a similar sequence as Esperanza. My little sister and I were moved to and from apartment to family member’s houses until our first small home. A home with no back yard and only four stairs and side walk out front. None the less, a home to call our own; it was then that I knew one day I will own my home painted “white with trees around it, a great big yard and grass growing without a fence.” Setting this goal meant one thing to me, out; out of Philadelphia like out of the House on Mango Street. How to get out and leave my home, my Philadelphia that is so much a part of my maturing process that has molded who I am today is the challenge. Poverty is the drive behind my force on getting out, like Esperanza, poverty is a constant scene that drives my motivation to rise out from my community in Philadelphia. For many families it is not unusual to live in a row home next to an abandoned home or open lot where houses use to be; look around and see no grass only concrete, see no trees only stumps of where trees use to be and garbage carried by the wind collected alongside stoop of houses. The tricky part of growing up with this experience is realizing it molds character and influences a sense of direction. My experience in poverty directed my ambition in education therefore strengthening my chances in attaining my goals. Ultimately what was said to Esperanza by the three sisters, “You can’t erase what you know. You can’t forget who you are” is valid in…

Many people engage in community service project because they are either forced as a punishment or sentence. Others engage in community service out of Spirit of unselfishness, or a desire to connect with their communities by helping out. For me, it brings a sense of completeness. During the past few semester my team members and I have engage in different projects, Collecting food, clothes and donating to the homeless. In a way I’ve experience working the different organizations and helping the community. But with this particular project, it meant much more then collecting for the disadvantaged, It was about lending a hand and your heart to a community in need.. During my involvement in this fieldwork project I got the opportunity to offer my unconditional assistance for one day in a non-profit making community based project. The name of the project was Liberty City Construction, which is being undertaken by a Christian ministry organization whose aim is to improve the livelihood of low-income families through building affordable and decent houses at a 0% interest rate.
