While there are many heroes in the US who are recognized for something they did for themselves, there are some unspoken heroes who should be recognized for their actions for others, for example, Sheldon Smith. Sheldon was an African American child who grew up without a father figure in his life, and who, at the age of 17, was sent to jail for robbery. While this may seem bad, it was the turning point in his life. "It was horrible. It scared me straight. It woke me up and saved me. I haven't been in trouble since." All these kids who don’t get in trouble as much, all the dads who are making a life for themselves, start participating in the community. And when they do start, they hear about politics, they hear about elections, voting, debates, and everything that comes with it. And what do they do? They start informing themselves, they start voting. They start getting involved! All of this change happened by one project: Sheldon’s. That is why Sheldon is my hero. He started to get people in his community involved on his own. He started to initiate change on his own, just by starting a project. In my opinion, he really has done something for modern America. He started enacting change in his community, which may not be much, but when he was recognized by CNN, people started doing the same. More people started paying attention to the community, what’s going on, and doing something about it, just like Sheldon. In conclusion, Sheldon Smith is my hero not because of what he did for himself, but for what he did in his community to help others like him.
