Anything can be.” On September 25, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, Shel Silverstein was born to parents Nathan and Helen Silverstein. He attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Roosevelt University, Roosevelt High School, Chicago College of Performing Arts ,where he was expelled, and then the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. When he was around twelve years old, he began to draw. He especially liked to draw cartoons. Growing up, he always wanted to be a baseball player, or at least hit it off with some of the girls. In 1950, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Korea and Japan. While he was in the Army, some of his cartoons were published in “Pacific Stars and Stripes.” (www.biography.com) Shel Silverstein married Susan Hastings, and then soon after had a daughter named, Shoshanna Hastings on June 30, 1970. He was a very talented songwriter, poet, and illustrator. He wrote many poems for everyone, no matter what their age was. He earned many awards and accomplished for his amazing work.
