Comments on "She Kills Monsters" After watching the theater production "She Kills Monsters," I have some personal perspectives, regarding six aspects of the theater: scenery, costumes, sound, lighting, actors, and summary.
Scenic design in theater The scenery of this production used a very dark color scheme. The type of the stage is very similar to a proscenium stage, which has many advantages including realistic settings, central focus, and also distancing (Wilson and Goldfarb 140). However, there are also some disadvantages that the distance between the stage and the audience is too far, and the audience cannot see the pyrotechnics clearly. The platform is composed of two parts: real world and virtual world. The main light effect gives the audience a sense of depression, and the major color is dark blue. The pattern of the stage consists of many small squares, which is alternate with black and white, letting the audience feel like they are in a science fiction atmosphere.
Costume design in theater The costume design of the play is pretty interesting. Costumes indicated the timeline and places that the story was taking place (Wilson and Goldfarb 173). Actors who dressed normally lived in the real world, and those who wore game costumes lived in the virtual world. The costume design also indicates the characterization. For instance, Agnes in normal clothes showed that she was a student and lived a normal life. Tilly who is Agnes 's sister, wore a black and tight costume with a sword. This showed that Tilly liked the passionate life. The accessories and weapons indicated which of the two spaces the actors were in. The make-up of some actors who lived in the virtual world was exaggerated and little scary. The hairstyles of the actors were also creative and varied.
Lighting in theater The lighting of the play also facilitates the expression of the time and place. When the light turned to red, it indicated that

Costuming is also something that changes widely throughout different performances of Shakespeare. The costumes can be modernized, or the actors can wear the traditional pumpkin pants. One example is the lion in the mechanicals’ play. The lion should look nothing like a lion. This makes it funnier when they make the announcement that it is not a real lion. One option is that the lion look almost like how a small child would dress if he wanted to look like a lion. It could have a mop on its head with whiskers drawn on its face and a yellow sweat suit. The fairies could also have some interesting options for costuming. They could be traditional fairies with wings and crowns, but another way to costume them would be to have them dressed in trench coats and hats to make it seem like they are trying to hide among the humans.…

It also helped the audience make sense of the setting because the transitions from scene to scene was quick and there was no background design. The lighting took my experience to a whole new level because it helped bring out all the characters and the settings. This play's setting was all dependent on the lighting because they used the lighting to establish the different settings and I think they were successful. It was the strongest statement in the production because not only did it help us, the audience but also the actors on stage to understand where the barriers were between different the rooms and helped make it look like an enclosed area.…

    Avenue Q Play Analysis

I like the set design of the play it looks realistic it seems like you are living in moment. For example, the wall was made of wood but the color contrast gave a realist impression. Also, the set design is important because it gives idea to audience where the setting of the play is located. Although the building in this play were relatively new, the original Broadway play set design was very worn out. In my opinion, if the play was old then the set design should look like the original Broadway play because on Avenue Q middle and lower class family leave. The apartment look like they leave on Avenue A. In additional, the costume is also important so the audience can figure out who they are. I think costume also show the personality of a character like upper, middle, and lower class and the costume designer of this play did great work. Especially, when two or three character wearing black cloths and the puppets were in red, blue, and green this shows the color…

    Bombshells

Firstly, the look of the stage for Bombshells definitely caught my eye at first. I was rather confused when I first saw it, wondering how this could work. Without any lights on, it looked like a panel of foggy glass windows. When the show began, they did make some interesting use of this type of backdrop. Rather than having to change the stage a lot for each scene which took place in a wide variety of locations, they used colors or just darkness to help set the tone for the scene. My favorite use of this stage setup though was the transition from one scene to another. Since Caroline O’Conner was portraying six different characters in this production, in between each scene required some rather quick costume changes. Rather than just have the audience sit there staring at nothing, we could watch the changing of the…

The scenery emphasizes the contrast of dark and bright. The stage itself is very dark with a black and gray backdrop of a waterway lined with boats and houses. In the middle of the stage there is a large, clouded glass window panel with dark black frames. The darkness of the stage and scenery helps emphasize the bright, pastel colors of the wardrobe and props. Brightly colored raincoats and umbrellas create a great visual effect against the dark background. The set featured a revolving platform that seemed efficient. With the platform, pieces that represented each part of the town could be easily brought in and out of view. One scene that the revolving platform was really useful in was the train station scene. As Guy is leaving to catch his train to the war, Genevieve runs towards him. The platform she is on starts to revolve counter-clockwise and pulls her back. No matter how fast she tries to run, she never gets any closer to him. This is very symbolic of how far away they will be from each other in the next couple of…

Some character’s costumes had more emphasis than others, such as Grendel’s mother and the Dragon lady. Mostly, the main characters had on “normal” clothes; nothing fancy. The ensemble all had on black capes with hoods which helped signify them all as one and set a stronger mood to their chorus singing altogether. This also gave an eerie feeling to the play when the ensemble were out. Plus, they were there as narrators of the scenes. Basically, the play was a parallel to the original book “Beowulf”, except the characters were tweaked some and the storyline was different. The main character, Ross, has a “bro-mance” with his roommate who has to move out, so he quickly receives a random roommate from an ad online, named Beowulf (“Beo”) who starts hosting parties at their place all of the time, causing trouble with the cops. Meanwhile, Ross’s girlfriend, Cass, and he start having problems, she ends up taking an opportunity in London and everything goes downhill. At the same time, Beowulf threatens their neighbor Grendel and steals his laptop and other items, but he has to manage his way out of the consequences by making deals with a dragon lady and by hooking up with Grendel’s mother; persuading her to drop the charges. Of course, there is a happy ending which in turn made me happy. I think the production very suitable to this play because it fit the mood of the college scene and was very relatable. The actors and actresses were excellent. Throughout the production, the sound was projected in a good tone for the audience to pick up all of the words no matter where they were sitting. I was impressed with my fellow students’ singing and acting talents. Plus, the play was enjoyable for college students and anyone older. There was a humorous theme, and also about friendship. The directing was well-done and precise. I would like to see another show done by…

Each character would have a specific outfit to help the audience identify who they were. Costumes consisted of loose fitting closes, tight fitting clothes and many colors to create an elaborate look. In commedia dell’Arte, the colors of the costumes would also represent mood and social class. Each character had a, individual mask that would also make it easy to figure out who each character was. The masks would also, “limit the view of the actors, making them snake their head from side to side to see what was going on. The characters all had characteristics that governed the way they moved and this would directly affect the way they did things on the stage.”(…

For example, in the piece staring Papas the characters are dressed in an attire which one would associate with Greek culture during that time period. The men are dressed in armor with swords and the women have long dresses that cover everything but the arms and face with elegant jewels on the gowns. For Juliet Stephenson’s character their attire seemed to fit more with the idea of the Middle Ages time and had a more modern look to them. Moreover, one thing each play had in common was the relationship between Antigone and Ismene was portrayed as if they were very “close knit” and the expressions on each actresses face was very similar to the other play. For instance, when Antigone is giving Ismene the opportunity to help her the character of Antigone gets very serious and focused upon in the camera until Ismene gives her speech about the risks involved with helping her…

Brindsley Miller is at odds with everyone in his living room. While all of his guests, intended and accidental, attempt to illuminate their condition both figuratively and literally, Brindsley desperately endeavors to thwart them to increasingly comedic effect. In Peter Shaffer’s one-act farce, Black Comedy, first performed in 1965, he amusingly juxtaposes light and dark in order to underscore the play’s central treatment of lies and deceit. Simultaneously its most distinctive and challenging feature, the play is performed under a reversed lighting scheme. The first scene unfolds in darkness.…

The aspects of lighting and sound in drama play a pivotal role in the progression of a play’s storyline as well as its ability to convey ideas to the audience. Arthur Miller's, “All My Sons”, and Tennessee Williams' “A Streetcar Named Desire” exemplify this use of visual and auditory elements for the purpose of story development particularly well, doing so in similar yet contrasting ways. The element of lighting plays a vital role in the interpretation of ideas in dramatic pieces, often occurring under one of two subsets, naturalism and expressionism. Naturalistic lighting is meant to represent the reality of lighting you might see in the real world, which can be seen in “All My Sons”.…
