Shawshank Redemption Film Techniques Analysis
In the film The Shawshank Redemption, the director, Frank Darabont uses many techniques to create meaning and emphasis regarding Andy and Red’s journey from institutionalisation to freedom. He uses a range of camera techniques, sound, theme and symbolism to convey his points to the audience. The audience sees the use of camera techniques to show that Andy is redeemed when he escapes from prison, sound to show the harshness of reality, theme to show that religion is to be interpreted, and symbolism to show that Red has an important decision to make.
The director uses camera work most effectively in the scene where Andy emerges from the sewer pipe. This is to show that he is reborn and redeemed when he leaves Shawshank. After Andy crawls out

In one of the last few scenes of the film, Red makes his way through a field, walking alongside the wall where he is to find a letter with money enclosed for him. He sits against the wall and opens the letter which reads “maybe you’re willing to come a little further” and hope is a good thing, maybe the best thing”. By reading the letter, he is opening the door to potential freedom. He is giving himself the choice to cross the line from past to future. The letter is a symbol of hope, but ultimately it is up to Red to see it as a good thing as opposed to hope being a “dangerous thing” which can “drive a man insane”. The wall also is a symbol of Red being in limbo between physical confinements within the walls of Shawshank and mental barriers of being institutionalised, as opposed having complete freedom and release from the past. The audience sees a shot of this contrast, with Red in the middle, and the wall and field on either side. We remember what Red said about hope, and how his mind-set is changing.     Darabont and Kesey use messianic imagery to display conflicts between hope and oppression. Darabont portrays Andy as a humble Christ figure who “…had a quiet way about him,” and strolled like he had “an invisible coat that would shield him from this place [Shawshank prison]” suggesting the same modest traits of Jesus.     STanner Eitel Professor Brooks Sociology 18 April 2011 Shawshank Redemption The classic film centers on the predicament of Andy Dufresne who is ultimately found guilty of murdering his wife and receives a life-sentence; all of this occurs with little circumstantial detail given to the viewer of his innocence or guilt initially. Dufresne arrives at the infamous Shawshank correctional facility where he seems to take on a positive and optimistic attitude despite his perceived innocence to the viewer and assumed guilt to the inmates; this is peculiar and admirable to those around him given his dire surroundings, especially so to “Red,” (Morgan Freeman) a fellow inmate, who ultimately becomes Dufresnes closest friend. The latter represents symbolic interactionism: people act toward things based on the meaning those things have for them. And Dufresne, conceivably innocent, approaching things positively. Next, functionalism is conveyed through Dufresnes newfound home in the prison: his new societal surrounding consists of various parts that allow it to function—i.e. the prisoners roles, the guards’ roles, the warden’s, the parole officers’, Dufresne’s role both as a prisoner and avid component of the prison library. Finally, the conflict theory presents itselfs through the prison’s power structure: Dufresne and his peers (the subject class) are at the mercy of the courts, the warden, his guards, and the parole officers (all which make up the ruling class)… Dufresnes story at Shawshank Prison, and his ultimate redemption as a innocent man who gains the eventual freedom he so patiently earned and rightfully deserved, is sure to please any avid…

    Firstly Darabont uses the character of Andy to show that if we have hope, we can maintain dignity as well as giving this to others. As human beings, we all have an innate right to be valued and treated with respect. In the prison the inmates do not receive this, but many are content to just accept this, and in doing this they lose their humanity and individuality. When we are introduced to Shawshank, a soaring aerial shot dwarves the prisoners and shows how insignificant they are. The lighting is dull and lifeless, with all inmates wearing identical grey clothes, showing us that the prisoners have lost all individuality. On Andy's first night the new inmates are stripped of their clothes and marched to their cells, where they are taunted and heckled by the other inmates as 'fresh fish'. Darabont has done this to show how the new inmates have been stripped of their dignity, but also that all other prisoners are behaving like animals and have lost their humanity. However, Andy immediately stands out from the other prisoners. His shirt, although grey like the other inmates, is buttoned fully up, and he stands tall.     SynopsisThe Shawshank Redemption is a dual-protagonist film based on the novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption by world-famous author Stephen King. It certainly falls under the genre of Drama, as it is a story of hope and, namely, redemption. Andrew "Andy" Dufresne, a New England banker, is wrongly imprisoned after being convicted for the murders of his wife and her lover, based largely on evidence that doesn't exist, and is sent to Shawshank State Penitentiary in Maine for two life sentences, the inciting incident of the film. Shortly before Andy's arrival in 1947, the film's other protagonist, Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding, is rejected in front of the parole board, after 20 years have been served on his own life sentence. Slowly, Andy develops a friendship with Red and his gang, a "man who knows how to get things." Red is notorious for his smuggling operation, in which, he can get "cigarettes, a bag of reefer if that's your thing, or a bottle of brandy to celebrate your kid's high school graduation. Damn near anything within reason." Andy asks Red for a small rock hammer, which, he explains, will satisfy his geology hobby.     The writing style feels authentic because Red’s vocabulary used to describe his experiences gave us insight to his awareness of the social relations between the problems, difficulties and hardships in the prison community and in Maine’s society, and awareness of the cultural relations that develop and produce open-minded and flexible mindsets towards thinking about life after prison. Red started off describing his function in the prison community as being reliable in fulfilling reasonable requests from other prison mates. When Andy began to communicate with Red to obtain a rock hammer and eventually several pin-up posters of actresses, this could be seen as the initiator of Red’s journey to finding his sociocultural identity because Red does learn from Andy that the items he would request symbolized his desire to return to society as a free spirited individual. As Red became attentive to Andy, he found that Andy went against the status quo because he would not conform to the culture of Shawshank State Prison and took control of his social life during his time in this environment. For instance, Andy demonstrated how he viewed himself in the world by applying the skills he acquired when he was in Maine’s society where it was a societal norm and value, to the prison community as a way to get a service in exchange based on his functional value.     Andy’s hope and determination keeps him from anger and insanity from being in solitary confinement and going through the horrific incidents throughout his time at Shawshank. The pinup posters of Rita Hayworth and other women represent the outside world and hope; it gives the inmate’s freedom to indulge in their fantasies, both sexual and about having freedom and hope. Rita Hayworth is the poster that conceals the hole in the concrete that Andy created with his rock hammer. She gives a sense of hope that keeps Andy alive and sane, it makes him different from the other inmates, including Red, who does not seem to believe that hope exists in a prison like Shawshank.     One of the ways in which Andy saves himself is by making projects for himself. The first thing that Andy does is to make little sculptures using a tiny rock hammer, although this seems a very small thing as an attempt to save him, the impact it has on Andy is miraculous.
