Shawshank Redemption
Reading the short story, A Clean, Well Lighted Place, written by Ernest Hemingway was the the oil to the gears in my mind reminding me of a novel i once read by Stephen King, titled Shawshank Redemption, As we had talked about in our class discussion on the Hemingway story, he leaves a lot of room in our mind to allow us to create and customize the story in our own unique way, which reminds me of the ending of Shawshank Redemption. *Spoiler Alert* In the end of the story Red is finally granted the parole he longed for, and in a early time in the book his closest friend incarcerated with him, Andy, had told him of a place with a rock wall and tree to go to, if he were ever to be granted freedom again. In the book Stephen King never tells us

    The Green Mile, a 1999 cinematic production adapted from Stephen King’s novel by Frank Darabont, contains an abundance of literary elements that when examined reveal irony, symbolism, metaphors, and . Set during the Great Depression and narrated as a flashback of an aging nursing home resident, Paul Edgecomb recalls his younger days as the head prison guard at Coal Mountain Louisiana State Penitentiary in this film. The title is a direct reference to the name given to prison block E as the floors in the prison that lead from the cells to the site of execution at Coal Mountain are green. Inmates on death row awaiting their final moments in this life take their final walk down “the green mile” to the execution chair but when examined on a deeper level it is the unveiling and development of the characters of The Green Mile that merit literary analysis.     In the movie The Green Mile there are 3 different sociological theories and concepts that are useful in considering how societies look at behaviors in life within the time and place. One theory you will see is that Emile Durkheim known as the functionalist applies throughout the movie. Terms that you will see in this movie include: conflict theory which is a theoretical framework that views society as an unequal system that brings about conflict and change. (pg. 8) Also you will see alienation which refers to a person of powerless, meaningless, and general criticism toward the political process.     The Green Mile is a book about miracles and belief in the seemingly impossible. Paul Edgecombe, the narrator of the story, is a prison guard at Cold Mountain Correctional Facility working in Block E, death row. This block is nicknamed "The Green Mile" because of the green tiles on the floor - the path that an inmate must walk from his cell to the room where the electric chair awaits. Edgecombe, a decent man, treats each prisoner with respect. Paul and the other guards are riled all through the course of the book by Percy Wetmore, a sadistic guard who enjoys maddening the prisoners.
