Shawnigan Lake School Personal Statement
Respected Mr. Robertson and Mr. Welsh,

I aim to convey my genuine intent in representing Shawnigan Lake School as a prefect. I love Shawnigan, I realized this as a ten-year-old touring for the first time with my mother. Now seven years from that day, Shawnigan has allowed me to understand what it means to love, it takes sacrifice. With years of immense sacrifice on part of my mother and Shawnigan, I am ready to show that love back in the best way I know possible, as prefect. I believe because of so much selfless investment in my time at Shawnigan, I can use that depth of heart to impact the lives that make up my home. Providing a unique link between our global community, school authority, and student body.

Driving me every day to put my best foot forward in academics, sport, fine art, not letting my time here go to waste. This mindset has allowed for my dedication to turn into amazing experiences. Including the honor of representing the school throughout the levels of the tri-tiered curriculum. In the fine art community, I have participated in British Columbia's Provincial Debate Qualifiers, the Canadian National Speech and Debate Seminar, featured artwork for Bean Around the World, and submissions to the National Film Festival for Talented Youth. Although a large part of my strengths are submerged in the arts, I have been able to push my boundaries regarding sport. With the countless options the school offers, I have been able to redefine myself and passions through field hockey, outdoor pursuits, rowing, and especially sailing. The extra-curricular programs at Shawnigan have gifted me a platform. Allowing myself to become a confident speaker eager to provide a voice to the student population, a trusted role model to those I have earned the respect of, and a positive yet humble individual in any

As a student I will be able to bring some unique and diverse perspectives to Grand Valley. Early on in my life, my family decided to take in foster children. Throughout the course of my junior year, I have been challenged to be the best artist of my ability. As a graphic designer, I have learned to view things in a different light and learned to express my creativity. Although I am still learning new things everyday about how to become a better artist, I have improved tremendously in every way ranging from the thought process all the way to finalizing each project, and I think that as the days go by I will continue to do well in my high school graphic design career, but in continuing my education in this major and working in a field closely related to it. I have produced at least 5 projects that reflect my passion for graphic design including the New York World’s Fair, currency recreation, and the handmade film poster from the first semester of my junior year and from the second half up until my most recent project, a book jacket, and an organic drink package design.…

Although I can’t answer all the questions about how I’ll do it, I’m certain that I want to make a difference in the world. Barnard’s atmosphere and its joint theater program are the main factors that have influenced me to apply. Academically, Barnard is known for its intimate learning environment. I’ve spent my entire life going from one close-knit group to the next. Whether it was Taekwondo, Dance, Theater, or The Commonwealth Governor’s School, each of those groups were empowering, nurturing, and noble in their own individual ways. Barnard embodies all of those qualities, which is what I find attractive. Also, the joint-program for theater really speaks to me because it’s my personal belief that collaborative endeavors create true art. It’s true art that touches the lives of those who work on it and those who see it.…

It was a pouring and cold afterschool afternoon at Westlake Elementary. I stood under the awning of the school as I waited for my mother to pick me up while holding tightly onto the clammy cardboard plate that displayed the gingerbread house I had made that day covered in a layer of plastic wrap. I had been waiting for hours and there were no other students to be seen. Yet, I kept looking forward to showing off my creation to my mother.…

To you I am just a one in the hundreds of applicants, I am just a grade on a paper – you don’t know me, you don’t know what I look like, you don’t know my story. There is more to me then that number on a page, and more that I would like you to get to know. I’m sure the admissions offices are flooded with the discontent of applicants who feel they deserve to have this opportunity. I can only imagine the difficulties that come along with sifting through piles of students ranging from across the country and even abroad, narrowing it down to the top contenders who are believed to maintain the reputation of UBC. UBC is one of Canada’s leading Universities, with an outstanding Kinesiology program that people such as myself dream of one day being…
